Scientists have experimentally proven that water has several liquid states

Physicists from the City University of New York for the first time in history managed to experimentally obtain supercooled water, which remained liquid at a temperature of minus 68 degrees Celsius.

The study of such supercooled water made it possible to experimentally prove that water has both at least two types of liquid state at once, which in this case have different physical properties.

Theoretical assumptions and real experiments

In an attempt to explain some of the unique properties of water, scientists more than 30 years ago using supercomputers, have suggested that liquid water can at least exist in two states.

And for many years, this theoretical calculation has been an insoluble task for physicists and chemists around the world.

And most of the researchers were of the opinion that water has only one liquid state. But the opinions of scientists began to change after it was found that some of the physical and chemical properties of molecules directly depend on the direction in which the spins of hydrogen atoms are turned.

And the first experiments with the so-called supercooled water showed that, most likely, liquid water has at least two phase states with increased and decreased density.

But since it was extremely difficult to separate such water from each other, disputes about the reality of such a statement and the theory itself arose constantly. But that was before the new experiment of American scientists.

Real experiment and discovery of new forms of water

As explained by Professor Jowam Battista, the main difficulty of the practical experience was that, according to the theory, water will be in clearly distinguishable phase forms only at temperatures of the order of -60 degrees Celsius.

And in ordinary experiments, water can be kept in a liquid state at a temperature of at least -48 degrees Celsius. And then if all impurities are completely removed from the liquid and cooled extremely quickly.

Scientists have managed to solve this problem in a rather original way. They decided not to cool the water, but decided to heat the amorphous ice of increased density using a special algorithm and a super-powerful infrared laser.

So the laser produced such short flashes of light that the density of the water sample remained unchanged when the ice melted, and it was this fact for the first time in history. allowed scientists to observe in reality how water of increased density is formed and to trace how it transforms into another phase state - light water density.

The observations made it possible to confirm the theory that water can separate into two types of liquid, while the dense version of water was at least 20% heavier than its light version.

Also, additional calculations performed showed that, under certain conditions, these two phase states of liquid supercooled water will not mix, and they will interact in much the same way as ordinary water and vegetable oil.
