How to prevent a barrel of water from bursting in frost: a simple way that will save capacity
Forgetfulness is a mean thing. I didn't drain the water from the barrels in the winter, the frost hit, and in the spring they can be handed over to scrap metal. But the burst barrel is not so bad. But what if a tank of five cubic meters bursts? It will be a shame! What needs to be done so that the ice does not spoil the containers - read on.
For barrels and small containers
The method is very simple and it is based on the laws of physics. So that the ice does not break the container, you need to give it something to crush inside. Something that will absorb the compression energy. Empty plastic bottles and cans are great for this.
It is necessary to pour a little soil into the bottle, screw the cap and lower it into the barrel so that it drowns. Or, you can simply tie the load to the bottle and lower it to the bottom of the container. One five-liter plastic bottle or canister is enough for a two-hundred-liter metal barrel.
But that's not all! The water begins to freeze from above, which means that the ice can break the barrel at the top. To prevent this, it is necessary to put a bar, board or shovel handle in the container. The wood will absorb the compression energy and the sides will not suffer.
For large tanks
Larger containers require more careful preparation. Tanks need not only to bury bottles and cans, but also to ensure that they are at half depth, as well as on the surface. Bottles that will float on the surface must be upright and 70% submerged in water.
Where else can you apply this method
There is another area of application of this method - in the cemetery. More precisely, this way you can save expensive granite and marble vases from ice. A small plastic bottle with earth at the bottom should be placed in a vase and it will take on the energy of ice compression.
Of course, you can cover the vase with cellophane and it's in the bag, but this does not help everyone. The film, for example, can be damaged by birds and if not followed, the vase will burst.
