Why are the joints on expensive wallpaper sometimes so noticeable
Not so long ago I glued wallpapers that were quite expensive, as for me. About 3,500 rubles per roll of 10 m. Part of the room is monochrome, and part is patterned. So, when pasting wallpaper with a pattern, a problem emerged especially clearly, the essence of which is that neighboring canvases could not be joined imperceptibly, how not to smooth them. It was a little puzzled, but then the difficulty was overcome.
There were two ways to solve. About I have already told one of them on the channel, and I want to share the second now.
The wallpaper was non-woven, for which I usually use French glue Quelyd (Kilit). The glue is good and there have been no complaints about it for more than one year. However, a lot depends on how it is planted and on which walls it is glued. As a rule, this glue is diluted like this: a pack of 4.5 liters of water and it comes out quite thick.
Now imagine that you smeared the wall with glue with a small margin of area, that is, you applied it to the site a little more than the width of the canvas, say by 20 cm. So, while the strip is glued to the wall, the glue in the free area is partially absorbed and partially dries up. Hence, when gluing the next strip, the same area will have to be lubricated with glue again and its layer, respectively, in this place will be morethan under the just glued canvas.
Then it is easy to guess that when joining adjacent canvases, due to the greater thickness of the glue in the previously smeared area, one of them will be slightly higher than the neighboring one, which prevents the joint from being visible.
Since the glue is thick, when it is applied in two layers, it is not possible to align the joints with a spatula. And if the wall also absorbs moisture rather quickly, leaving a dehydrated thick layer, then this will not work out all the more, and the result will be, as shown in the pictures below. And the point here is not at all in the wallpaper, as many think.
To avoid such a surprise, you can do two things:
- When glue is used for gluing, it is better not to smear the wall along the edge of the first canvas, and do this when the adjacent strip is glued and then smooth them together. In this case, there will be one layer of glue under both edges of the canvases.
- You can glue the first sheet as usual (spreading glue with a margin of width), and when gluing the second strip, the edge of the first raise and smear the wall under its edge again, then both edges will be at the same height and the joint will turn out imperceptible.
I used the second method with this wallpaper and did not disappoint. And he did so until the very end of the work. The glue was thick and the wall was rather porous. After correcting the shown joint, I photographed it again to show the difference. I think you will notice her. A finger points to the seam line in the picture.
If these methods of gluing help someone, I will be very glad. Share in the comments if this has happened to you.
That's all for now!
