Breakthrough in hydrogen fuel - Powerpaste is created
An international scientific group succeeded in developing a completely new energy storage system - paste Powerpaste, implemented on the basis of magnesium hydride. This substance turned out to be capable of accumulating hydrogen energy with a density 10 times higher than that of classical lithium-ion batteries. I want to tell you about this unique development.
Hydrogen fuel and its main disadvantages
So, if we look at modern cars that run on hydrogen fuel, we will see that hydrogen is transported in a gaseous form.
This creates an increased pressure of about 700 bar in the hydrogen storage tanks. These very tanks are the biggest disadvantage compared to electric cars.
After all, dimensional and heavy, and even filled with hydrogen, they not only occupy a fairly large volume useful space, but also weigh decently, which completely negates the increased density provided energy. It is for this reason that we do not see hydrogen plants in small vehicles and motorcycles.
So the engineers from Dresden, it seems, managed to eliminate this drawback and here's how.
New development of scientists
In their scientific work, scientists decided to mix magnesium with hydrogen at a temperature of 350 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 6 atmospheres. Next, an ester and metal salts were added to the resulting composition to form a viscous gray mass.
Thus, the scientists named the resulting substance Powerpaste. As further experiments showed, the paste obtained in this way turned out to be significantly more stable than gaseous hydrogen and was perfect for filling into specially designed containers, which were also developed scientists.
Tests have shown that Powerpaste is absolutely safe at 250 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the substance turned out to be able to store up to 10 times more energy than similar lithium-ion batteries, and much more than the capacity of hydrogen with similar dimensions.
At the same time, according to tests, the range of electric cars that will run on Powerpaste can significantly exceed the parameters of classic gasoline cars.
But the engineers who developed the new lineup decided not to focus only on electric cars and came up with a proposal to transfer not only cars, but also other vehicles to Powerpaste. So initially it is planned to create electric scooters that will operate on hydrogen engines using Powerpaste cartridges.
And, as the scientists especially note, the "refueling" of such cartridges will be extremely simple and quick, just take a filled cartridge and add a small amount of ordinary water.
By the way, this development has already been approved by the Institute of Advanced Technologies and Advanced Materials. Fraunhofer, and soon the construction of a special line for the production of Powerpaste will begin. It is planned to put the lines into operation in the second half of this year and receive a pilot batch of four tons of unusual pasta next year.
