Choosing tomatoes for a greenhouse for 2021: varieties that are time-tested (which I chose for the garden season)
Here comes a couple of crops of our favorite garden crops. I'm just about to start sowing peppers in 2 days (I just can't wait, the pens itch). And there, in a few weeks, in March, you can sow tomatoes.
For the 2021 season, I decided not to deviate from the classic varieties. After all, they are time-tested, I sowed some of them in the past years, but the choice also fell on tomatoes that I have not planted yet.
Perhaps I will add other varieties to the list. For example, this will include the classic Oxheart tomato that I sow every year. This is just a favorite in our family. Especially my mother adores him. I think that many summer residents and gardeners appreciate this variety for its meatiness and delicate taste.
Greenhouse varieties for 2021
Yesterday I bought several varieties for the greenhouse: these are "Striped Chocolate", "Black Prince", "Pink Elephant", "Cow's Heart". I have not planted these varieties yet.
"Black Prince" is already considered a classic. It is popular among gardeners, known for its unusual dark color, with a pronounced salad taste. The fruits of the variety are dense, weighing 200-400 grams, with a high content of sugars, therefore, the tomato is referred to as dessert. Children adore it for its sweetness and delicate taste. Tomato is not suitable for canning, but juices are made from it.
"Striped chocolate" is another of the dark varieties, which is distinguished by its unusual color and excellent sweet taste. They refer it to exotic beef tomatoes. They say that whoever has grown "Striped Chocolate" at least once never leaves it anymore and plants this variety in the greenhouse from year to year.
A bush grows up to 2 meters in protected ground. Fruits reach a mass of 200-250 grams, but with good care it gains up to 500 grams. A very fleshy tomato, with a slight sourness, there are few seeds on the cut. As noted on the package, the yield reaches 8-10 kg per 1 sq. meters.
In addition to "Bull's Heart", I decided to try to grow another "Ox Heart". I would like to compare them to taste.
The fruit is also heart shaped. According to the manufacturer, this is a late-ripening variety, the bush grows up to 1.5 meters in height. The fruits are not stored for long, they have a pronounced tomato flavor.
Another fleshy, mid-early greenhouse variety is the Pink Elephant. But it is successfully grown in open ground, greenhouses.
The plant is medium-sized, semi-determinate. Fruits are pink, large, up to 300 grams. Tomatoes are sweet and juicy. The variety is resistant to disease. Juices, mashed potatoes, pastes, and pickles are made from the fruits.
