Spied on how a neighbor was planting Cucumbers last year

The method of growing cucumbers "herringbone" is interesting in that you can get a good harvest with minimal costs (labor, time and material).

Last year, I watched a neighbor in the garden construct a frame in the form of a cone, and did not even suspect what such a structure was being made for.

Pros and cons of the cucumber herringbone

With proper care, cucumbers grow well in a greenhouse, actively scatter whips in the beds. However, in the conditions of a small plot, it is advantageous to use compact options for cultivating crops in a vertical way, for example, with a "Christmas tree". It is important to know about the advantages and disadvantages of the technique.

pros:

· The frame can be made from improvised means, which is beneficial for the budget;

· The design is extremely simple, any gardener can easily handle;

· Cucumber lashes create a shade, the soil inside the cone retains moisture, there is no need for frequent watering;

· Lashes grow vertically along the twine, greens are not formed on the ground, therefore they are not very susceptible to bio-threats;

· On a cone frame, you can grow more cucumber bushes than in the usual linear way, and harvest a decent harvest.

In addition, a cucumber "herringbone" with bright flowers and green pendants looks stunningly beautiful against the background of garden plantings and will become a spectacular decoration of the site.

Minuses:

· The cucumber vertical will shade the neighboring plantings, not every plant will like the lack of sunlight;

· There will be difficulties with harvesting, since according to the laws of gravity, the fruits will hang inside the cone, with rare exceptions when the green leaves remain outside due to the dense weaving of shoots and foliage.

According to my observations, the method is suitable if a site protected from the wind is chosen, otherwise the cucumber lashes may suffer from strong gusts.

The nuances of planting and care

The essence of the technique is that for planting seeds / seedlings of a cucumber, you will need a round bed with a diameter of 1-2 m.

Sequence of work:

1. In the center, we install a solid support (stake, timber, board, wide plastic pipe) with a height of 2-2.5 m or more from the ground surface. The underground part of the support structure is at least 1 m.

2. We equip the top of the structure with a twine / rope fixation device.

3. We dig planting holes or a trench around the circumference, apply fertilizers, stick a peg or a special loop under each bush.

4. We pull the twine by tying one end to the peg. We pass the second end through a loop at the top of the support, lower it and tie it to a peg for another bush.

5. We plant seedlings / seeds and take care of them taking into account the requirements of agricultural technology of the selected variety Scourges of plants will gradually be guided along the twine and over the summer they will wrap around a conical frame.

Using the example of a neighbor, I became convinced of the effectiveness of the method and plan to grow herringbone cucumbers this year.
