We get rid of the kidney mite on currants in early spring. What you need to know
It's March, and it's time to talk about pests on fruit trees and shrubs. From early spring, experts recommend taking care of the future harvest of berries and fruits.
In many summer cottages, black currants are grown. But often this shrub is overwhelmed by pests. He has basically three of them: gall (leaf) and shoot aphids, kidney mites. The latter will be discussed further.
Kidney mite. Breeding features
This pest brings a tangible loss of yield on black and red currants. They hibernate in the buds of a berry bush. In appearance, the kidneys look larger and rounder than the rest. The female (like the male) of the pest is small and difficult to see.
In spring, when the ambient temperature reaches more than +5 degrees, the female begins to lay eggs within 20-25 days. She lays up to 8 eggs daily. It turns out up to 50 pieces per month.
After 7-8 days, larvae appear, which harm the kidneys, eat the green mass inside it. After another 20-25 days, young females appear, which again lay eggs. As a result, in the spring, the emergence of 2 generations of these pests is obtained.
When the bud opens, the larvae begin to look for new food for themselves. On their way, they meet other buds and feed on them. Wind, birds, and other insects contribute to the spread of the tick.
Kidney mite control measures
Mechanical method
In early spring, when the snow melts, you should inspect your currant bushes for possible infected buds. If any, they should be removed and incinerated. This method is suitable in the case of a small number of currant bushes.
Drugs
If there are a lot of currants, you can use the following methods.
In the budding phase, the use of acaricides is suitable, when there is a massive migration of the tick over the plants. This will be the first treatment. You can use the chemical "Apollo", "Kontos" with an interval of 10 days (treatment is carried out 2-3 times).
The air temperature during treatment with drugs should be at least +5 degrees. The next spraying should be done after the currant has flowered. In this case, try to use biological products "Aktofit", "Fitoverm", which work in dry weather and at temperatures not lower than +19 degrees.
Hot boiling water
Until the buds swell, in early spring, experts advise pouring hot boiling water over the bushes from a watering can. This method will help get rid of pests. But this method helps to protect the plant from aphids (its eggs perish when interacting with boiling water). The boiling water temperature should not be less than +80 degrees. At least a bucket of liquid should be poured onto one plant.
Garlic and mustard infusions
From folk remedies, the following infusions of garlic, mustard are used.
You will need 400 grams of minced garlic in a bucket of water. The mixture is infused for up to 3 hours. Then diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 10. For 10 m2, you need to use 1 liter of liquid. Trunk circles are also treated with this liquid, which eliminates the larvae wintering in the ground.
You will need 200 grams of mustard powder per bucket of water. The solution is insisted up to 48 hours. This solution also fights glass, fire, aphids.
Before use, the mixture is filtered, diluted with water in a ratio of 1 to 5, and the branches are treated.
