Why you can't rush to plant tomato seedlings. Dates for planting tomatoes in a greenhouse and open ground
Some summer residents and gardeners transplant vegetable seedlings into a greenhouse, open ground ahead of time, not on time. The time of planting young plants in the greenhouse differs from the dates of planting them in unprotected soil. What are the consequences of early planting of tomato seedlings in a permanent place?
What are the advantages of a greenhouse over open ground
If you have a greenhouse, this has some advantages. You can grow tall tomatoes in it, get earlier harvests of greens and vegetables. It protects plants from strong winds and sunburn.
Why you don't need to plant tomato seedlings before the beginning of May
Often, the seedlings taken out in the greenhouse do not withstand night temperatures, especially if the structure is not heated. No shelter helps, so you can lose your "growths".
This year in the middle lane just makes surprises. If in mid-April the weather was warm, then by the end of the month there was a cold snap, return frosts.
The temperature during the day does not rise above +10 degrees, and at night it stays slightly above zero even at the beginning of May. Last year it was much warmer, and I planted tomato seedlings on May 7. Some peppers are already blooming, but planting them in a greenhouse is just still cold for them.
What are the consequences of return frosts if the plants are planted in a greenhouse in April? The temperature may not drop to zero, but at temperatures below +10 degrees, the roots stop consuming nutrients from the soil, +5 degrees for seedlings is already stress. Lack of nutrition affects the appearance of tomatoes.
Plants do not receive additional phosphorus, stems and leaves may turn blue before our eyes. With a lack of potassium, the tips of the leaves turn yellow, turn brown and dry out.
Phosphorus and potassium are two important elements that are involved in the formation of the root system. Due to their lack, the plant shifts the timing of fruiting. Therefore, transplanting tomatoes to a permanent place ahead of time does not guarantee an early harvest. The lack of elements also provokes the formation of long internodes on the plant, the laying of the brushes is delayed.
At temperatures below +10 degrees, the number and development of inflorescences on tomatoes decreases. The plant does not receive additional boron and other important trace elements. Of course, you can put the heater in the greenhouse, but it will be costly from an economic point of view. It is better to wait a week until the weather improves, and at night the temperature does not drop below +10 degrees, and then plant tomatoes.
Seedlings of tomatoes that have experienced stress from low temperatures will no longer give good yields. It will be, but several times lower.
In open ground, under a temporary shelter, tomato seedlings should be planted when the threat of recurrent frosts has passed. The most reliable date is after June 10th. But many are planted in the middle lane after May 20, if the weather permits.
That is why I do not recommend planting tomato seedlings ahead of schedule. As a result, you can lose a good harvest of tomatoes.
