Homemade lathe chuck. Turning example
Greetings.
This homemade chuck does not grip the workpiece, but it is convenient to sharpen from hardwood with it.
I needed to carve a lot of small balusters for the kitchen balustrade.
Made from oak and 20x20 mm blocks served as blanks. section.
I don't have a lathe chuck to clamp any workpiece.
And in order to clamp such bars in an ordinary four-toothed center, they need to be prepared, since a simple installation, the teeth of the center did not push through the butt of the oak and the workpiece was scrolled (stopped) when turning.
Then I thought that the square workpiece can be wrapped from the outside and it will not scroll.
To do this, I screwed a wooden blank to the faceplate.
Then I installed the faceplate with this blank into the machine and adjusted it a little so that there were no beats and vibration.
Then I installed a chuck in the tailstock and drilled a hole along the diameter of the workpiece.
You can make several holes with different diameters and at different depths to make steps.
After the faceplate is removed and using a chisel at the drilled holes, you need to cut the corners to get squares.
Installing workpieces in such a chuck is obtained in one motion and it is enough to tighten the workpiece with the center of the tailstock to start sharpening.
With this method of fastening, the workpiece is held very securely, and it is quick to install and remove them.
In this way, you can easily fix square workpieces of various sizes.
When making the balustrade, I used the scraps that I was already preparing to burn, but here they came in handy.
