The secret of installing slate without gaps and gaps. Forgotten old-fashioned method
Several years ago, I helped a relative to cover the woodshed with slate. The roof area was small, no more than 20 m2. But we fiddled with the sheets all day. The thing is that cracks formed in the overlap places and snow could get into them with the wind, falling out inside the structure. And since there were no films under the slate, we had to sort through the sheets, choosing the slate with the most suitable geometry.
Only recently have I learned a simple way to quickly and with minimal effort to perfectly fit each sheet. Moreover, between them there will be no gaps and even hints of gaps. To do this, you need to follow these rules:
1. We mount the sheets in vertical rows. No horizontal installation of the rows as with other sheet roofing materials.
2. It is necessary to trim the diagonal corners of those sheets that are joined and then overlapped by the overlying sheet.
Mark out the corner and cut off the upper right corner of the lower row and the lower left corner of the upper row. Shown here is a close-up and installation diagram:
For the same cuts on all sheets, you need to have an upper and lower sample. Thanks to this method, the overlapping sheets will be at the same level in height and no gaps will form. For a better understanding of the process, you can watch a short video:
It can be seen that the slate fits tightly to each other, the sheets do not have deformations and this is the key to the long service life of the roof. Slate often cracks under snow load in places of distortions and cracks.
If you follow this installation principle, you can be sure that the slate will last 40, 50 years or more. Especially if it is produced by well-known quality control factories. As, for example, in the factories of the company BF Techhave been producing slate in the European part of Russia for decades.
The advantages of slate are known to both the builder and the summer resident. In addition to durability, rain is practically inaudible under the slate roof. Slate heats up less and does not transfer heat well. And if after 10-15 years the slate is covered with a dark bloom from mosses and lichens, then it is cleaned with a high pressure washer:
And the roof will again look like a new material.
