How to remove a chuck from a screwdriver or drill - a universal replacement method
It took me the other day to remove the old cartridge from the drill in order to change it to a new one. When I did it for the first time, I was pretty much worn out. I had to figure it out. I will show you how to unscrew the cartridge using the example of a DVT drill and a Bosch screwdriver. But the method is suitable for tools from different manufacturers: Makita, Interskoll, Metabo, Devolt, etc. And also of different designs: self-clamping and gear-girth gear. I'll tell you about the possible nuances that I had to deal with. If I had known all this before, I would have saved a lot of time.
See if there is a locking screw
Not all models of drills and screwdrivers have a screw that fixes the chuck in the working position. We separate the cams completely and see if there is a screw head inside.
What keys are needed
Most often, I came across with screwdrivers with Phillips screwdriver screws. But there are heads for an asterisk or a hexagon. Look carefully.
Even if you see a Phillips screwdriver head, pay attention to its standard size. Usually the most common screwdrivers in everyday life are the PH2 size. In my case, the hat turned out to be slightly larger - under the PH3 bit. If the profile is incorrectly selected, the faces will converge. There is little pleasant in this. I will also tell you what to do in this case below.
We also need an L-shaped hexagon. What size it will be is not so important. More on this below.
Which way to unscrew the cartridge
The first time I spent too long at this stage.
On all drills and screwdrivers (of those that I know), the screw-counter has a left-hand thread. This means that it unscrews clockwise.
Directly the cartridge with the familiar right-hand thread - we unscrew it counterclockwise.
How to unscrew and replace the chuck with a drill or screwdriver
- Unscrew the fixing screw (if any).
- Clamp the short side of the L-shaped hexagon into the drill.
- We switch the screwdriver to the drilling mode and set the first speed (if it is adjustable).
- While on the weights, we vigorously hit the hexagon with a hammer or a wooden die so that it rotates counterclockwise.
As a rule, these actions are sufficient. They say that in old drills, the thread can sour so much that it will not work so easily to replace the chuck. In this case, it is advised to warm up the outer part with a construction hairdryer. The thread is loose and easy to loosen.
How to screw the cartridge after replacement
The procedure is almost identical to withdrawal.
We screw on the cartridge and fix it by hand. We briefly turn on the drill or screwdriver. This force is sufficient for a secure fixation. Tighten the fixing screw (counterclockwise) - done.
What to do if the edges on the screw are torn off
This is often the case if you have used the wrong screwdriver profile.
We unscrew the licked screw or drill it with an ordinary drill. We clamp the drill in a vice (if there is no second drill) and start drilling. Due to the fact that the thread is left-handed, the screw from the screwdriver can simply be unscrewed. The drill works like an extractor.
If the screw is not unscrewed, its head is cut off with a drill. We unscrew the cartridge - we see a free "tail" of the thread. You can usually grab onto it easily. pliers (or pliers) and unscrew. We buy a new screw at any service center - it's done.
