Popular cutting board. Carpenter's view
The end cutting board, in my opinion, has several positive aspects, because of which I prefer these boards.
Main advantages
Such a board has an attractive appearance. And each has its own unique pattern.
Above in the photo there are three ash end boards and each has its own unique pattern.
These boards are usually quite massive boards, which is convenient when working.
Traces of a knife are practically not visible on them, and pieces of wood do not split off, unlike ordinary side boards.
They are also more durable. This I can say from personal experience.
I made the first such boards about seven years ago as gifts to relatives. This year, I visited all my relatives, to whom I presented such boards and paid special attention to them.
The boards look like new, although the knife marks are visible, all the boards remain even without a hole in the center.
And the cutting board, which I had from a solid board, during this time I planed a couple of times in order to level the work surface, on which a noticeable depression appeared from the work.
Manufacturing advantages
I'm not talking about the industrial production of such boards.
In my home workshop, when working on various projects, many different scraps arise from which it is a pleasure to make such endboards.
I will give an example of such a board, which I made the other day.
From the manufacture of panels for kitchen facades I have a few scraps left, which are most often thrown away.
They are slightly more than 100 mm wide. I sawed them into three pieces and glued the blank for the board.
Glued with woodworking PVA class of water resistance D3, this is enough so that the board does not stick out from water during operation.
Some people have a question about the toxicity of the glue in contact with food.
I usually use common sense in such cases: the glue seam in such boards is very, very thin - this is the first, and the second PVA is by definition non-toxic.
For those who require written confirmation. I know only one company that took care of a marketing move for such cases and wrote on one of its types of PVA glue that it is certified for contact with food.
As a result, I got just such a board made of oak.
Of the minuses
Of the minuses, I would only note that such boards require regular maintenance.
When making them, they must be soaked in mineral oil. I use liquid petroleum jelly from the pharmacy. It protects the board well and after being soaked in oil, it can be easily washed with water.
In the future, you need to wipe the board with this oil at least once every six months, and preferably once a month.
I personally found it difficult to get used to this additional care. Usually, after all, how - washed after work and that's it.
Output
An end cutting board is a beautiful and functional wood product that can be a good gift.
In addition, it can be made from almost anything. For example, I made a board from 20x20 mm larch scraps. section. And I also saw such a board made from scraps of fruit trees: apple, cherry, pear.
