I laughed for a long time at the phrase: "Work like dad Carlo." Amazing facts from stories about Pinocchio and Pinocchio
Usually this phrase is perceived as a lot, a lot and diligently to work, and then there are companies called "Papa Carlo", obviously they also assume that they work a lot and diligently.
But as I recall, dad Carlo was an organ grinder... and something is wrong here ...
Just in case, I decided to look at the text of the tale and discovered several very curious things about Pinocchio, Pinocchio, other heroes of this story, as well as their real prototypes.
Comparison of stories about Pinocchio and Pinocchio
I will not list all the differences, I will note only those that hooked me.
Let me remind you that the tale about Pinocchio was written by Carlo Collodi, and the tale about the Golden Key was written by Alexei Tolstoy. Initially, Tolstoy worked on the translation of the book, but in the end, based on the original idea, he created a fairy tale in the spirit of socialist realism.
As you remember, the carpenter was a friend of the creator of the wooden doll and this fact is present in both stories. And dad Carlo and the same character from Pinocchio did not have their own workshop, one was an organ grinder, the other was interrupted by odd jobs.
By the way, Pinocchio (Italian. burattino "wooden doll-actor", puppet), and Pinocchio (from Italian. pino "pine" + occhio "eye"). Sometimes this name is translated as "Pine nut" or "Pine nut"
It turns out that the main character was made of pine. And here's an interesting fact.
In the book about Pinocchio, robbers (Cat and Fox) try to stab the protagonist: “And they snatched out two huge, razor-sharp knives and
with a swing, they drove them to the side of Pinocchio.
But fortunately. The Wooden Man was crafted from
the best solid wood. The knives flew into a thousand pieces
in the hands of the robbers were only the handles, and both are stupid
goggled at each other. "
It turned out to be a hard nut, and pine is still considered a tree with soft wood.
In the story with Pinocchio, the plot is quite short - 6 days, during which all the main events take place and the main characters receive a reward.
In the story of Pinocchio, the events last for about three years and at the end of Pinocchio he works a lot, sleeps little and becomes an ordinary kind boy, leaving the image of a wooden doll, and of course he receives a reward from the fairy.
Karabas-Barabas in "The Golden Key" is a negative character, a kind of bourgeois exploiter, obsessed with the thirst for profit. He gave money for Pinocchio only in order to be the first to discover the secret of the golden key. Remember the book's release date - 1936.
In the book about Pinocchio, the owner of the puppet theater, Manjafuoko has a kind heart and gives money with a desire to genuinely help.
In general, there is a lot of cruelty and violence in the story about Pinocchio, the main character has to overcome difficult life situations, work hard and hard to get his reward in the end.
As an example of cruelty, a quote about the attack of robbers.
“Then the lesser of the robbers drew a huge knife and
tried to insert it in the form of a chisel between Pinocchio's teeth. But
Pinocchio seized his hand with lightning speed with his teeth,
bit it off completely and spat it out. And imagine him
astonishment when he noticed that instead of a hand he spat it out on the ground
cat's paw! "
Continuation of Pinocchio
Based on the information I found, the author of Pinocchio started writing a book out of the need for money.
He disliked children and endowed the hero with, in his opinion, bad character traits, and initially ended the story on how the Cat and the Fox hung Pinocchio on an oak tree. He thought it would serve as a warning to disobedient children.
Little readers liked the tale very much and the editorial office of the newspaper, where this story was first published, was inundated with letters asking for a continuation.
The author had to write a sequel, describe the re-education and transformation of the protagonist into a human.
As a result, Pinocchio spent 4 months in prison, spent a year at school, spent five months in the Land of Entertainment and three months spends in the circus, and then works hard for another five months: carries water, weaves baskets, and in the evenings he reads and by letter.
Real prototypes
There is evidence that Pinocchio had a real prototype - Pinocchio Sanchez. Born in 1790 in Florence. The boy did not grow well and was only 130 cm tall.
At 18, Pinocchio Sanchez went to war as a regimental drummer. After 15 years of service, he returned home legless and crippled.
The incident brought him to the physician Carlo Bestulgi, who made him wooden prosthetic legs, as well as a wooden insert for the nose.
This is how a wooden man appeared instead of a cripple.
Sanchez performed at fairs and attracted crowds of people who wanted to see the living puppet. In one of these performances, while performing a trick, he fell from a height and crashed.
And how did daddy Carlo work?
Let's go back to the expression "Work like daddy Carlo", that is, to plow in as much as you can, in the sweat of your brow.
From these tales it is generally not clear where such an expression came from.
At Tolstoy's, dad Carlo was an organ grinder - he walked the streets, twisted the handle of a wooden music player and lived.
At Collodi's, the creator of Pinnochio Geppetto was interrupted by odd jobs, and he decided to make a doll so that walk around the world with this wooden man and earn a piece of bread and a glass wine.
When Geppetto came up with the name for the wooden doll, it was also not about working tirelessly. «What name will I give him? - thought Geppetto. - I'll call him Pinocchio. This name will bring him happiness. Once I knew the whole Pinocchi family: my father's name was Pinocchio, my mother was Pinocchia, the children were Pinocchi, and everyone felt great. The richest of them lived on alms».
If anyone worked in this story, it was Pinocchio before he became human.
