Who among us doesn't like gooseberries? There are hardly those who are indifferent to this berry. Children adore it for its tart sweet and sour taste, housewives for aromatic jam and compote, and men for great wine! In order for the gooseberries in your area to give a rich harvest, use four simple rules for caring for and feeding.

Thin the plant

Gooseberry is an extremely light-loving shrub. He just needs the sun's rays. But there is a problem - the bush is actively growing, and therefore the upper branches shade the lower ones. This provokes a decrease in yield. To fix the problem, you just need to cut off everything unnecessary from the bush.

Superfluous can be considered:

  • thin and diseased branches;
  • broken;
  • those that lie or practically lie on the ground;
  • intertwining shoots.

Cut off the tops of the remaining stems. The place of pruning is up to the first strong side branch. The procedure is performed in early spring, even before the buds bloom.

Second cut

After harvest, do a second pruning - reduce shading. Remove the least productive branches. That is, those on which there were very few berries or none at all. And also remove the shoots that have grown at the base, but not all - leave 4-5 strongest shoots. If the branches are affected by powdery mildew, cut them back to the first healthy bud.

In late July or early August, pluck - remove all annual growths. This simple operation will increase the yield, and the berries themselves will become larger.

Top dressing and recipes

Gooseberry bushes need to be fertilized five times per season.

  • The first feeding is done with leaf blooming. Composition: dilute 1 tbsp for 10 liters of water. spoon of urea and 2 tbsp. spoons of nitrophosphate. The rate for 1 adult bush is 2 buckets of solution.
  • The second feeding is carried out at the beginning of flowering. Important: before the second feeding, sprinkle one glass of ash under the bush! Ingredients: potassium sulfate - 1 tbsp. spoon, water 10 liters. The rate for 1 bush is 30 liters of solution.
  • The third feeding - during the ovary of berries. Ingredients: water - 10 liters; nitrophoska - 1 tbsp. spoon, potassium humate - 2 tbsp. spoons. The rate for 1 bush is 30 liters of solution.
  • The fourth feeding is autumn. Produced: late September - early October. Ingredients: double superphosphate - 1.5 tbsp. spoons, potassium sulfate - 4 tbsp. spoons. Mix fertilizers, spread evenly under one bush, water.
  • Fifth, final feeding. To be held at the end of October. It is necessary to lay 3-4 kilograms of rotted manure under each bush.

Move the neighbors

Many varieties of gooseberries are partially self-fertile - they themselves tie about half of the berries from a possible harvest. Plant other varieties of gooseberries and the harvest will double!
