Slab fence: a cheap, but worthy alternative to fences made of profiled sheet and boards

In stable times, even construction sites are not enclosed with this material. But the current rise in metal and timber prices made him remember. We are talking about a slab (another name is obapol). Exactly what is considered waste of woodworking industries will come to the rescue and will save tens of thousands of rubles on the construction of the fence.

As it was before

Previously, if a practical and cheap fence was required, only the croaker was used. Such fences were often temporary. They were erected quickly and without wonder: round timber racks; veins and slab sections; an ordinary nail acted as a fastener. The lumber of the sections was fastened vertically, horizontally, in solid, with gaps or in a checkerboard pattern. All this looked miserable, but practical: aesthetics were zero, but the fence fulfilled its direct function.

How can you do now

The times of freebies are irrevocably gone, and they stopped paying for hack. There are a lot of quality goods on the building materials market and they gradually forgot about the croaker. Only the designers have not forgotten about it and, having conjured a little, turned these illiquid trimmings of logs into a real work of art. Now a croaker that has been in skillful hands is called a loft or rustic style!

And all that needs to be done with it is to remove the bark, treat it with an antiseptic to prolong its durability, cover it with a glaze or paint it. The second option: remove the bark, burn and varnish. After these rather simple manipulations, the "frog turns into a princess", and the fence stands out with an eye-piercing originality among the masses of monotonous and boring professional sheet.

What's the price

At the moment, obapol is sold at 500 rubles per cubic meter. This price is without selection. That is, everything will be shipped at the sawmill. But usually it is a croaker with a length of two to six meters. About a third of it will go for firewood, and the rest can be successfully applied to business. Based on this, we can calculate that a cube of "business" slab without delivery will cost 650 rubles.

You can resort to a rough calculation. For example, to enclose a plot of 12 acres with a two-meter fence, which is 140 meters around the perimeter, you will need 933 boards 15 cm wide and 2.5 cm thick. In pure cubes it is 7.015 m³. Even if half of this volume will be spent on firewood. This means that it is necessary to buy 15 cubic meters of slab for the fence for this area. In money, it will come out 7500 rubles without delivery.

But the wood needs to be brought to an aesthetic look: painted or burned and varnished. A two-meter fence for a plot of 12 acres will come out in an area on the front side of 280 sq. meters, and on both sides, respectively, 560 sq. meters. If we take into account the average gas consumption for firing and paint or varnish, then for one square meter of the treated surface, you need to lay down 60 rubles of additional costs, which in total will come out 33,600 rubles. That is, for this amount, the fence will acquire a decent aesthetic appearance.

As a result, an obapol with processing, necessary for a fence on a plot of 12 acres, will cost 41 thousand rubles. Add conditional delivery to this amount, round it roughly and get 50 thousand rubles. Here we do not count posts, lintels and fasteners. We take into account only the net cost of the fence made of this material.

If we compare with the substandard professional sheet, which costs 950 rubles per piece. 200 * 115 cm in size, it turns out that for 50 thousand rubles you can close 60 meters of the fence instead of 140 meters, which can be blocked by a decent-looking croaker. Savings by 2.3 times compared to the substandard standard galvanized professional sheet of the 1st category, which, by the way, looks far from presentable. If you do not burn and do not cover with paintwork material, the savings will be much greater.

What design can be used for a slab fence

There are many options here. Poles and lintels can be made of wood or metal - from a professional pipe. The layout of the board can also be used whatever: ordinary solid, with gaps, double-sided in a checkerboard pattern, horizontal. As they say, what the fantasy tells.

Of course, when erecting a fence from an obapol, labor costs will be much more than when installing a professional sheet or a regular board, but with limited funds, this is a good way out of the situation. In simple words: cheap and cheerful!
