Business in the yard: how does my neighbor earn 60-80 thousand? rubles per month

Is it possible to organize a profitable business in your own backyard or garage? This is perhaps the most exciting question in recent decades. Business is a complex process, but it is quite possible to achieve certain success in it. And you can do this even in your own yard and without large investments. One such case was told by our interlocutor Ilya.

We have few prospects and no high-paying job

Before telling this story, I asked my neighbor for permission. He agreed, but at his request I will not indicate the city, names, and, accordingly, I will not attach real photos from his production. But all the events are taking place now, in 2021, and from my story it will be clear how you can unwind in your backyard, and even with a scanty initial capital.

We live in a town with a population of 120 thousand people. There is work here, as it were, but they won't pay more than 30 thousand. And then, 30 - I turned it down! The real average wage in our country is 23 thousand rubles a month. For women, the situation is even worse, for them even 20 thousand is considered a good income, and they work for 15-17 thousand. In general, an ordinary poor hopeless town.

Neighbour

Three years ago, a neighboring house was bought by a young married couple (spouses 30 years old; children - 4 years and 7 years old). They moved from the district center. The new neighbor immediately began looking for work and a week later got a job as a mechanic in an electromechanical workshop. I also work at this enterprise, but as a driver. Actually, there we met.

The work at our enterprise would be tolerable, but there is one peculiarity - salaries are regularly delayed, and it happens that even for three or four months. We have such despair that you will not be very indignant at this, since there is not much work, and if you quit, you will find absolutely the same, and maybe even worse. In general, people somehow endure, they live in vegetable gardens and subsidiary plots.

But my neighbor could not stand such a burden for more than six months. Well, imagine you have a wife and two children. For one small salary, you need to eat, dress and pay a communal apartment. And it is also given out in pieces and at random. Sometimes it happens that they pay 7 thousand in advance a month and that's it. We usually pay off debts completely by the New Year, May holidays, or at the big request of a certain employee, if something happened to him. In general, the guy could not stand such slavery and left.

He settled down in the cemetery as a grave-digger. The money there, though small, is paid immediately. Yes, and shabashi are either money, or vodka, or food. My neighbor stayed at this job. In addition to digging graves, he mastered the installation of simple monuments and fences. He adjusted his financial affairs at the cemetery a little.

Business and initial investment

In March last year, he approached me with a request to bring a concrete mixer and get the cargo from a transport company. He doesn't have a car, but I have a Gazelle, that's why he turned to me. When we were going to pick up the cargo, he asked if I would like to additionally earn extra money for him in production and delivery. He is not a drinker, he is serious, reliable, and I agreed without hesitation.

On that day, we took away an old, but solid concrete mixer, as well as plastic molds and some other cargo in bags. The next day we went to a metal warehouse and hardware stores. By the weekend, he poisoned me for cement, and also asked me to meet a car with gravity.

For the next week, he cooked and repaired something in his yard. By the weekend, he called me to pour a concrete area under the awning. When the screed was poured, he devoted a little of my person to his work. He said that he was planning the production of concrete platforms and lintels for ritual monuments.

In general, he bought a concrete mixer, as well as metal and a motor for making a vibrating table. I ordered several plastic molds for the production of lintels and sites for monuments. I bought dyes and additives for concrete (plasticizer, paints and fiber). I brought plywood and lumber for formwork from the lumber yard. With delivery, 70 thousand rubles were spent on all inventory and equipment.

He had a shed in the yard, and 12 thousand rubles were spent on filling the site. And also sand, crushed stone, cement, masonry mesh were purchased for production needs. It took another 20 thousand rubles. As a result, the initial investment amounted to a little more than 100 thousand rubles. A little - will you agree?

The meaning of a business idea

The gist of his business idea is simple. Our people are mostly poor, and it is difficult to scrape together money for the installation of the monument. In addition to the fact that the monument itself is expensive, a site is also needed for it. We sell them - the cheapest marble chips cost 4,200 rubles. There are granite and marble platforms, but their cost starts from 15 thousand. Expensive and not all will pull.

And a cheap platform made of marble chips does not solve the problem - it begins to crumble after a few years and needs to be replaced. There are also concrete "buns", but they look very unpresentable and people practically do not buy them.

My neighbor offered another product in our ritual market - a platform made of so-called architectural concrete. This product is quite beautiful - it has a brick pattern and a glossy painted surface. But the main advantage is the price, which is more than acceptable for our people. Looking ahead, I will say that this idea is far from new, but, apparently, he just got into that time and place. The people have become poorer and the time has come for total economy. And here it is cheap, and beautiful, and angry!

Cost and selling prices

First, about the cost of his product. A painted concrete slab with a size of 1.6 * 0.8 m and a thickness of 5 cm costs him at full cost of 550-650 rubles apiece. This includes reinforcing mesh, concrete with plasticizer, fiber and dye, and electricity costs. An unpainted plate costs 400-450 rubles. For help in making one site, he pays 200 rubles. I work part-time as a concrete worker.

Selling price wholesale: painted plate - 1800 rubles; unpainted - 1300 p. Retail sale price: painted plate - 2800 rubles; unpainted - 1900 p. Jumpers cost 200 rubles, and are sold at 300/400 rubles.

How is he doing now

It started production in 2020. But due to the pandemic, sales went closer to the fall. Last year we filled in 1–2 slabs a day (he bought additional forms from the first sales). Of all this, 20-40 slabs were sold per month. Ritual offices became the main buyers. They traded these plates at exorbitant prices, but the newly-minted businessman received little from the wholesale. In August last year, for example, his net profit was only 28 thousand rubles.

But he invested this money in the business: he bought forms, tools and equipment, and also prepared many free samples for the spring. For almost the entire fall of 2020, we drove in my car to regional centers and villages and offered products to ritual firms. He handed out nearly 80 free samples to entrepreneurs and it gave quick results.

By the spring there were already more orders. They were bought by both local entrepreneurs and ritualists from the surrounding towns and villages. And retail customers also pulled up, since it will be cheaper to buy this stove from home than to a cemetery. He has already sold about 350 units this year. If we translate this amount into income, then his earnings only from the sale of plates is 60-80 thousand per month. Plus, he is engaged in installations, from which he also has a good income.

This year he legalized himself - he made an individual entrepreneur. And next year plans to expand both production and assortment. He intends to cast curbs, tiles and resell granite and marble monuments. I work for him as a foreman and a freight forwarder. He pays me 35 thousand so far, but I only work in the evenings (after 17:00) and on weekends. Promises more, but I have to quit my main job. Probably, I will do so by the next season. Still, at least some kind of prospect has appeared, and this business is eternal.
