How to prolong the fruiting of tomatoes in August-September. What to do to make tomatoes blush faster
The beginning of August for gardeners is the time when they take full advantage of the results of their labor, they eat delicious vegetables from their garden. These are tomatoes, cucumbers, early peppers, eggplants, herbs.
As for the tomatoes, a lot of them were born on the bushes this year. They grow both in the greenhouse and in the open field. The favorites for our family to taste turned out to be: Ox heart, Striped chocolate, Black Prince, Persimmon, Tiger, Pink honey.
I grow my tomatoes in the greenhouse until mid-September or until the end of September (depending on the weather).
How do I prolong the fruiting of tomatoes
After the ovaries have formed, fruits are formed from them in 40-45 days. Therefore, in September, you can not only harvest, but also increase it several times.
Pinching the top
In the first decade of August, I always pinch the tops of tomato bushes. This method makes it possible to ripen and fill the green fruits that are on the plants.
Removing stepchildren and extra leaves
Once a week I go through and remove the appeared stepsons. If they are not removed, then the bushes will spend food on the formation of new flower brushes, but we do not need this at all, because at least the green fruits should ripen before frost.
With the gradual ripening of each brush with tomatoes, you need to remove the leaves under them. Between the plants, there should be good blowing, there should be no thickening, otherwise favorable conditions will be created for harmful pathogens. In thinned bushes from stepchildren and leaves, more sunlight falls on the fruits, they ripen faster and become sweeter.
Top dressing
In August, you need to continue to feed the tomato bushes. Correctly selected fertilizers will provide shelf life, improve palatability and quick filling and ripening.
The fertilizer must contain phosphorus and potassium, trace elements and humic acids.
In August, you can use monopotassium phosphate, potassium sulfate (1 tbsp. spoon for 10 liters of water), potassium humate (1 tsp. spoon for 10 liters of water), superphosphate (1 tbsp. spoon for 10 liters of water), ash (1 glass for 10 liters of water) as top dressing.
Monopotassium phosphate is used for spraying on a leaf or watering at the root (10-20 grams per 10 liters of water).
For the prevention of apical rot, it is necessary to use calcium nitrate or dolomite flour, the latter (1 glass of substance) is quenched with acetic acid in an amount of 150 ml, then poured into a bucket of water for 10 liters.
Watering
In the last month of summer, watering for tomato bushes should be reduced. If in June-July I poured 4-5 liters of water under each plant 1-2 times a week, then in August the amount of water should be reduced by 2 times, that is, 2 liters of liquid for a tomato is enough. Drying out, too, should not be allowed, so it is advisable to use mulch on the beds.
I stop watering 2-3 weeks before the end of the season (the last fruits on the uppermost brushes begin to turn red) so that the fruits have time to ripen before frost.
Protection from infection
In August, the air humidity rises, fogs begin in the morning. Therefore, it is required to continue to protect our plants from late blight and various spots. For this, the drug "Fitosporin" and "Alirin-B" are suitable.
If the infection does appear, then you can use "Cuprolux", the fruits can be eaten after 4-5 days of waiting.
