Hip roof construction in 5 days without scaffolding. Was surprised by the speed and quality of the builders
Having built the foundation, walls and floors of the house with my own hands, I decided to hire a brigade for the roof. This is a responsible and complex assembly for one person. The construction can take months. And since flexible shingles will be used in the project, in the fall the sheets will not be able to bake together and the shingles will lift up in the squally wind. Everything is better done in the summer.
Preparatory work. First, I made a tape of sand concrete for a Mauerlat:
The overlap of MARCO was poorly smoothed in places and the gaps under the timber were not needed. In addition, this raised the Mauerlat by 1 cm and during rains without a roof it will not get wet. I also made the sides in the opening for the pipe.
Mauerlat will be made of 150x150 mm timber. Studs embedded in the ceiling stick out to a height of 170-180 mm. Waterproofing width - 200 mm. How to smoothly and quickly cut a strip from a roll of roofing material - article here.
Holes in the roofing felt from the pins and seams were missed with bitumen mastic. Delivered and lifted lumber on the floor. By this time, in July, it had already risen in price to 22 thousand. rub / m3. Although in May it cost 15 thousand. rub / m3
The planks and beams are lifted by the manipulator of the truck. I found a five-tonne with a boom length of 10 m.Inexpensive delivery and simultaneous lifting for only 6000 rubles / flight
On the first day, the builders installed the Mauerlat and almost half of the rafter system of the hip roof. The design and calculation of the roof was done in kalk.pro and calcstroy.ru and SketchUp. There will be a separate article about this. I also sent my sizes to the regional office of the manufacturer of flexible tiles. Chose Shinglas from Technonikol - a line of two-layer shingles Ranch, brown. The company confirmed my calculations for the roof area and provided an offer in the form of invoices with the entire set of materials.
I also bought OSB sheets there. Made the price lower than other suppliers. And the plus is that you pick up the entire volume in one place (here I saved on delivery). I bought all the materials (except for nails, screws and corners).
Sheets and roofing material were also lifted up immediately. The monolithic overlap allowed this to be done. Photos from the second day of construction:
Self-tapping screws asked to use yellow, not black. But a part has already been screwed in black.
Frankly speaking, builders do not suffer from perfectionism. Especially when there are two more objects ahead of them. But the quality of work is acceptable considering this speed.
In order to increase the working day, they lived in the house. Someone slept in the car. But they worked from 7 am to 9-10 pm. Of the 10 days they designated for building a roof at such a speed and 7 days, it was clearly a lot.
The speed of the builders was increased by their use of pneumatic hammers (neilers). There were two types of them - for long nails and for roofing nails for shingles.
In addition, he asked to mount the so-called "filly" cornices. So that the filing of the cornices is not tilted, but horizontal. Props for the rafters are also made.
On the third day, the lathing was installed and proceeded to the installation of OSB sheets, underlayment and the most flexible shingles. All without the use of forests. To do this, the builders nailed only the bottom row of OSB and mounted the carpet and tiles on it, then moved up.
As an underlay I used Anderep Next Self (self-adhesive underlay carpet) from TechnoNIKOL for the cornice layer and Anderep Next Fix for the layers above.
After fixing the underlay, one of the fitters secured themselves with ropes, went down to the edge of the roof and installed the shingles. The second gave him the elements. The lowest shingles were additionally fixed on mastic. Five nails were driven into each sheet. And when installing the top row, five more were added.
OSB sheets were moved to the roof itself and distributed from above on the roof. It is imperative to control the gap between OSB sheets of 3-5 mm. Otherwise, in the heat, the roof can go in waves due to the expansion of the OSB.
View from the inside of the roof. The ventilation ducts were installed immediately. The passage elements for them with caps were immediately purchased.
The diameter of the ventilation ducts is 110 mm. There are five of them on my roof. Plus two aerators for ventilation of the attic - so that condensation does not form.
Sawdust from OSB sheets was blown off with a neiler compressor before laying the underlayment.
Elements of shingles must be mixed, taken from three different packs, then there will be no differences in shades on the roof:
The fourth day of work, and the roof is almost ready:
While the builders left a small hole on the roof, I took a few photos of the final work:
The passage ventilation elements were mounted especially carefully, additionally they were coated with mastic:
End of the fifth working day and the final view of the roof:
A frontal metal strip was purchased in the color of the roof: RAL 8017. But the builders promised to fix it during the installation of gutters. They will come when they are free. Of course, this is all additional work and payment. The covering of the rafter system with a fire-retardant composition was not done immediately. I did this later, purchasing the components and making the fire-biocomposition myself. There will also be a separate article about this.
Roof in the color of the fence or a fence that matches the color of the roof. The construction process of these five days can be seen in the video:
And, perhaps, the most interesting thing for many readers is the costs. Lumber: 80 thous. rub. OSB - 85 thous. rub. Roofing material and consumables - 140 thous. rub. Work: 215 thousand people rub. Total: 520 thous. rub. at the peak of the cost of building materials this season.
