How to plant figs, pomegranates and other exotic things so as not to freeze

click fraud protection

Last year was on our channel article about figs and persimmons.

Suddenly, the other day, a lot of comments with appetizing photos appeared on her. And, in the end, our subscriber shared how they plant figs and pomegranates in their city, with the expectation that it would be convenient to shelter for the winter. I'm embarrassed to ask his name, nickname: nphne-xnpr3pky

I asked his permission, and I am writing an article based on his photos and stories. So that more people could read and see what I liked so much, it warmed me so much :) And to find out how in Tikhoretsk they pragmatically approach the planting of figs and pomegranates.

Just look!

A bit of geography. Tikhoretsk is located on a plain, it is a steppe, 130 km from Krasnodar. The climate is temperate.

And such beauty grows there:

About persimmon

There are already many varieties of persimmon that do not require shelter for the winter. Persimmons can be planted like an ordinary tree, only in the warmest place protected from the wind.

It grew from a store seedling, reached 5 m. This year it is resting a little, the harvest is expected to be small.

And last year it was like this:

This is despite the fact that she is alone, without a pollinator. With a girlfriend, another persimmon, she could give up to 50 kg. A year any persimmon has a bountiful harvest, the next year is small.

After such photos, I certainly wanted to plant a persimmon. Found it already, and in Kursk on AVITO, and in the Belgorod region for sale (our neighbors), in Shebekino. I'm trying to get in touch. I need one tree, which means either it will be self-pollinated, or grafted so that there are female and male flowers on it. I ask you to advise the variety.

Enough prose! Do you know how persimmon blooms? Like this!

As far as I understand, there are single female flowers and twins, 4-6 petals each, and the male ones (they are not in the photo) are bunches of small flowers, 3 pieces each

About figs

Figs recovered after freezing
Figs recovered after freezing

Let me remind you, a photo of a subscriber, nphne-xnpr3pky, this is his fig. He froze this winter, although he was covered. In the photo I have already recovered, I have grown by 1.5 m in the spring-summer. The frost was below -15 °, everything froze out to the level of the soil.

How did he hide so? He simply bends down the branches that can be bent and sprinkles them with earth 20-30 cm from the soil level. For several years this was enough.

There is a more radical way to protect against frost; it is used in Tikhoretsk for figs and pomegranates. Prepare a trench for landing. Trench size:

  • Length - 2-2.5 m
  • Width - 1 m
  • Depth - 30-40 cm

The edges are reinforced with improvised material so that they do not crumble. Figs or pomegranates are planted in the center. So, the soil level for the planted seedling is the bottom of the trench. Late in autumn, when the leaves have already fallen off, frosts begin at night, tree branches bent into the trench, fixed with staples, and covered with something, for example, with old slate (the edges are sprinkled with earth), or covered with leaves.

In those parts, figs are opened in early March. We have it a month later, I guess.

You can root figs with cuttings, like grapes.

In general, figs, it turns out, give 2 harvests from a good life: a small one in the middle of summer at the tips last year's branches, and the second harvest is tied all season, ripens until frost, you can eat with late summer. Some do not have time to ripen, those that started after August 20.

With pomegranate everything is the same as with figs. Only the beauty is different!
