How to make an "invisible" plug for fasteners in wood products. Drill trick

click fraud protection

Several years ago, I needed to hide the hardware when making a bunk bed. I did not find special drills for making plugs with a selection of textures in local stores. And it was necessary to do it urgently.

I found a solution to this problem in a hardware store, and have been using it ever since.

It turned out that instead of a special plug drill, a crown for metal and other materials is quite suitable - without a drill in the center.

It is most convenient to use such a crown in a drilling machine.

Although at first I used a drill.

You need to use a little trick to drill with such a crown using a drill. And for this you need to make a simple conductor. It is enough to spend a couple of minutes on manufacturing.

A thin (6-10 mm) piece of plywood or any other suitable material is taken and a hole is drilled in it along the outer diameter of the crown.

In my case, a diameter of 15 mm came up. The crown fit into such a hole quite tightly.

Further, this jig is tightly pressed against the bar from which the plugs will be made, and the required number of plugs is drilled.

And then these plugs need to be cut out, and this can be done with a hacksaw, on a band saw or on a circular.

The crown was originally taken at 16 mm. diameter, and since the MDF for the conductor is thin and relatively easy to cut, a hole of 15 mm was enough for the MDF to work as a guide for this crown.

The plugs in my case are 12 - 12.5 mm.

Nowadays it is not difficult to buy special plug drills. For example, on Aliexpress or in the All Instruments store. But if for some reason it is not possible to purchase plug drills, they can be replaced by crowns from a hardware store.
