Two ways to quickly cover lumber with fire protection. From the advice of builders and their experience
When using lumber in construction, it is recommended to cover the surface of the wood with fire-retardant protection. This is not about front parts and decorative surfaces. For example, beams, rafters. The fire protection itself is somewhat controversial when coated with liquid products from home improvement stores. But for biosecurity, the means will help. Bark beetle larvae will not start, mold will not appear on the tree.
I tried covering in the simplest way - with a roller. This is a lengthy process. The coating of seven pieces of timber took more than two hours. I did not proceed to the boards, because this coating was washed away by the night rain. On the advice of the builders (who erected the roof), I decided to cover the rafter system after the roof was erected. Although, I see at some facilities that this is done before the roofs are erected. What will be left of the coating after the rains? What will be the residual effectiveness of bio-fire protection? My opinion is that the builders are right. The composition is washed off by rain and it is better not to cover the boards in advance.
It is one thing if the roof is of an attic type, then it is better to cover the rafters immediately before installing the roof or before insulation. But if the roof is with a cold attic, then you can cover it later.
I covered with such a cordless garden sprayer.
A pneumatic sprayer is also suitable for these purposes. There are always 5-8 liters garden ones on sale: you pump up pressure with a piston and it sprays for several minutes. Their cost is about 1000 rubles. Later it will come in handy for spraying aphids and ants on trees.
The process is fast enough. This can be seen at several points in the video:
The video also contains a recipe for breeding fire-biological protection from boric acid and soda ash (only from boric acid). Or read about this information in article. It turns out 9 times cheaper than cans from the store
But it should be borne in mind that when spraying lumber, the consumption of the fire-retardant composition will be 10-20% more. If the product was diluted on its own, then this is not so critical in terms of price. Consumption approx. 3-5 m2 / l in one layer. The disadvantage of this method is that in the places where the sheathing boards touch the OSB and beams, their surface remains untreated. It is very important that there is no wane in these places.
If you nevertheless decided to cover the lumber with fire-retardant protection before erecting the roof, then there is another way to quickly process the lumber with a fire-retardant composition. This is the immersion method. It is more effective for protection, because the wood is impregnated deeper.
They make a bathtub of boards, cover it with polyethylene with the film fixing with a stapler along the upper edge. And planks are dipped into it (2-3 pieces are possible. at a time). It is better to keep the boards in the bath longer, the layer of wood impregnation will be deeper. But the expense of funds will also increase. The method is suitable for those who need to cover a large volume of lumber. Roller is too long.
After processing, about 5-10 liters of fire-retardant composition will remain in this bath. They will have to cover the boards with the same roller. Or drain and leave for other work.
