Leave the rose to winter "as is", without pruning

"Did I raise her to be cut off?" - says a novice gardener who does not know anything about the successful cultivation of roses. Those who want to make friends with the "Queen of the Garden" will have to accept it as truth: only regular pruning makes a truly beautiful and powerful plant out of a rose..

I am not going to talk about the formative cut of the rose in all variations now. It is a big mistake to leave on the rose in autumn what prevents the rose from ripening or has not ripened before the onset of cold weather:

• I cut all the rosebuds in the middle of September. The rose should complete its annual cycle, smoothly retiring to rest. The buds, as a continuation of flowering, do not allow the plant to calm down. And it will be taken by surprise by the coming cold. And we know that frosts in Russia always come unexpectedly.
• Unripe (red) shoots should be trimmed when the temperature drops below -5 ° C. A warm haircut will only irritate the rose and she will decide to grow new ones. Leaving red shoots is dangerous for the whole bush: they will not be able to withstand the frost, because they have not matured. Dying tissue will become a breeding ground for infection (fungi and bacteria), which will not miss the opportunity to spread to healthy branches.

Make the wrong hiding place and lose grade

It is better not to cover roses at all (many varieties in the Moscow region hibernate without shelter, although I do not advise taking such risks) than to cover them with material that does not allow air to pass through.

My sister planted miniature varieties along the path and for some reason the idea of ​​covering them with cut 5-liter bottles seemed to her a good one.
