How to sharpen scissors efficiently at home: 2 simplest ways

What scissors are these methods suitable for?

The methods described by us are suitable for stationery, as well as some types of tailor and kitchen scissors. That is, for a tool whose cutting edges are even, they do not have teeth and various "sawing" surfaces. By the way, office scissors are most often used in everyday life. But manicure, hairdressing and other professional scissors for sharpening are better for specialists.

Method one: sharpening with sandpaper

For this method, you will need fine-grained sandpaper (P600, P300). All you have to do is just cut the sandpaper. But you need to cut it not somehow chaotically, but over the entire length of the tool blades. That is, it is necessary to open the scissors so that the angle of the blades (in a simple way - the blades) is 90 degrees, rest the sandpaper against the crosshair of the blades and make a cut until the cutting edges are completely closed. This operation must be done 20-25 times, then turn over the sheet of sandpaper and make another 20-25 cuts on the other side. After this procedure, the scissors will restore their cutting functions.

Method two: sharpening with a sewing needle

A thick sewing needle is required here. The principle is as follows: open the scissors, firmly rest the needle on the crosshair of the blades, close the canvases. With this method of sharpening, the needle must be held firmly and always strictly perpendicular to the blades; the closing of the canvases should be done with little effort. That is, the needle should not slide along the cutting edges - its task is to act on the metal: to edit the blades. You need to make 50–80 such closings. It depends on the condition of the scissors and the steel from which they are made. Important: a needle is needed of high quality, steel, and not one that bends at the slightest effort. If there is no such needle at home, which is not surprising lately, then you can use the back of a thin drill.
