Is it worth growing hawthorn
Our hawthorn grows and bears fruit. Already 3 m tall. I don't know the variety, but cultured.
He doesn't need a pair. Self-pollinated. Honey plant.
This year, for the first time, there are a lot of berries on it, and the last two seasons were with a symbolic harvest - there is nothing to look at. And this is no coincidence.
Our hawthorn is 10 years old. It turns out that he may not bear fruit until 15 years! He has a principle: first gain strength, then bear fruit. Where is the hurry? Lives up to 300 years!
While people do not cherish the soul in columnar early-growing trees, the hawthorn is completely different, but it remains fashionable! Breeders are breeding new and new varieties, berries in some varieties up to 4 cm in diameter. Our classic, a little more than 1 cm.
I mean, the hawthorn is full of obvious flaws, but they plant it, we love it! Despite the fact that the bush is most often thorny, there are few thornless varieties. Our thorns are several centimeters long, in other varieties they are from 0.5 cm to 10 cm. Cutting it off is not fun at all. Berries must also be picked with care.
Cozy autumn berries! We want to make a resting corner just next to the hawthorn.
Their taste is pleasant, sweet apple and rosehip at the same time. There are 4 bones inside. We insist it in a thermos, it turns out a light aromatic drink. And we just enjoy eating hawthorn!
If that was all I know about the hawthorn, I wouldn't have planted it. I don't like thorns :) Very much. But! This is not all.
At first, the bush is completely unpretentious. Independent. I treat it, along with all the trees, with the Preparation 30+, and that's it. Sometimes he gets something biological for the prevention of caterpillars. Sometimes, because I can spray it only slightly outside, the bush is too thick. Therefore, there is no enthusiasm.
Secondly, birds like him very much. Hopefully they won't miss the opportunity to eat the pests of our crops. When the hawthorn blooms in May, a variety of insects flock to it. Including May beetles. They all love flowering hawthorn more than other bushes and trees. Therefore, all the birds are on the hawthorn!
Thirdly, hawthorn is not afraid of our coolest frosts (and in - 30 nothing froze). AND drought resistant (checked). We practically do not water it.
Fourth, of course, benefits of berries. Zen rules do not allow me to write all the good things about the beneficial composition of hawthorn berries. I will say one thing, I was impressed by this line-up. We venerated him together with the whole family. Good! There are many antioxidants... It is not for nothing that it is appreciated more and more with age. It's time for me too!
It's good that he is growing with us!
How do you feel about hawthorn?
I would be grateful for your subscription and communication :)
