But why do Americans and Europeans refuse this cereal, valuable in all respects? Let's look at the reasons for this dislike.

Is buckwheat grown in the USA and Europe?

In the USA, buckwheat has been grown since the 18th century, in Europe even earlier. By the way, two American presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, were among the first farmers to cultivate this crop. And now it is grown there in considerable volumes: the United States currently ranks 7th in the world in the production of buckwheat.

  • But “not eating” and “growing” are two different things. Firstly, the Americans will not give up what makes a profit: they export buckwheat all over the world, and Japan is the main consumer of American cereals.
  • Secondly, buckwheat is unpretentious in cultivation and is a valuable nutritious feed for livestock. This factor reduces the cost of production of meat and dairy products. And as we know, in the USA they know how to count money.

  • Thirdly, buckwheat is one of the main crops for honey production. It has increased rates of nectar productivity and yield. And this, again, is a benefit for beekeeping farmers.

Now about the dislike for this culture

The main reason for the Western people's dislike of buckwheat is the fact that it is livestock feed. Common disgust. According to the stereotypical opinion of Americans and many Europeans (France does not count), what a person eats is unacceptable for a person to eat. Or it will only eat poor people who have no money for "normal" food. Of course, it's not very clear what they mean by "normal" nutrition? Maybe hamburgers, blood steaks and cola?

Another reason is the taste incomprehensible to overseas taste buds. For them, buckwheat, to which we are accustomed and consider it sweetish, appears bitter and gives off a chemical aftertaste. They compare her taste to some unpleasant medicine - that's the whole reason.. But, it is worth noting that buckwheat is sold in pharmacies, since it is considered more medicine than food. Our compatriots living overseas buy buckwheat groats in Russian, Ukrainian and Polish stores.

But you shouldn't be offended by their disdainful attitude towards the products popular in our country. This is their opinion and let them live with it. We have the same squeamish attitude towards many overseas dishes. For example, the same steaks with blood - we have them only for everyone. Many of our compatriots consider undercooked meat a breeding ground for parasites. Who loves oysters or frog meat? Admit it honestly - are there such gourmets? Or the British adored oatmeal. We mainly eat it only under duress - athletes and those who need a diet. Oatmeal is unlikely to be put on our festive table!
