Scientists have created a one-component adhesive that hardens only under the influence of a magnetic field

We are all used to the fact that one-component epoxy glue hardens when exposed to heat or ultraviolet radiation. Both options have their significant drawbacks, which the Singapore scientists managed to level out. They created an epoxy adhesive that only hardens when exposed to a magnetic field. That's what I want to tell you about this invention.

A new word in bonding

One of the main problems with epoxy resin, which hardens under the influence of heat, is that you also need to heat up the parts to be glued, which is not always acceptable, and they can simply deteriorate.

And also a lot of energy is required for heating. In addition, if the parts to be glued are opaque, then ultraviolet radiation will not have access to the contact point.

In order to solve these problems, engineers at Nyang Technological University decided to mix in a certain proportion nanoparticles of manganese, zinc and iron.

So, as it turned out, if such a mixture of glue and particles is exposed to a magnetic field, the nanoparticles begin to heat up and thereby start the glue crystallization process.

It turns out that there is no need to add any catalyst (as is the case with two-component epoxies) and there is no need for UV access.

As the experiment showed, in order for one gram of glue with nanopowder to harden, it is necessary that it (the glue) be influenced by an electromagnet with a power of 200 watts for five minutes.

For comparison, in order for a similar volume to solidify, glue without impurities is necessary for a furnace with a power of 2 kW * h to work for a whole hour. It turns out that the new development is able to cut costs by 120 times.

Also, tests have shown that the strength of such a connection is in no way inferior to conventional epoxy adhesives, and the pouring time and temperature can be finely tuned specifically to the requirements of the consumer.

So, according to one of the leaders of the study, Professor R. Ramanuyan, the thermoregulated magnetic nanoparticles they created are specifically designed to be added to existing one-component materials. So most of the existing adhesives are easy to convert to magnetically activated.

How much the development will be in demand on the market, time will tell. If you liked the material, then put your thumbs up and subscribe. Thank you for your attention!
