Seasonal tips for the gardener: why I decided to plant garlic in September
Every year, garlic was planted in late October or early November. This year I decided to plant one small batch at the end of September as an experiment. As many bloggers do this as well. Then I will compare the garlic planting in October and September.
What are the benefits of planting garlic at the end of September
Some agronomists on the Internet say that when you plant garlic at the end of September, you can get a good harvest. The clove develops a good root system in favorable weather conditions. In spring, September garlic will begin to germinate earlier than garlic planted in late autumn.
Of course, with early planting of garlic, it can germinate before the cold weather, and the seedlings can freeze when frost sets in. But thanks to the powerful root system, the feather will grow back later in the spring. The plant quickly recovers all losses and produces new leaves, distills late garlic.
Features of the choice of planting material
For planting, it is better to choose one variety of garlic so that it ripens at the same time. The largest bulbs, and therefore the cloves, should be selected. This nuance must also be taken into account if you want to get a rich harvest of garlic.
It is required to disassemble garlic into cloves on the day of planting. Otherwise, they may dry out and then sprout poorly. There should be no remnants of the previous bulb on each clove, otherwise this can lead to insufficient moisture of the planting material during sprouting of the roots.
Pre-sowing treatment
Before planting, the cloves must be treated with any disinfectant (fungicide), for example, you can purchase the drug "Maxim", "Metaxil". Treat pests with the drug "Alatar". You can make a tank mixture, where all the preparations are placed, according to the instructions. Planting material is etched for about 5-6 hours.
Garden bed preparation
The garden bed is prepared 3-4 weeks before planting. During this time, the earth will settle, and you can plant garlic.
Under the culture, organic matter must be introduced in the form of humus in an amount of at least 5-10 kg per 1 m2. Fertilizers should be dug to a depth of 15-17 cm with a shovel or pitchfork.
How to plant
On the day of planting, grooves must be marked on the garden bed. The scheme for planting garlic is as follows: 20-25 cm between rows and 15 cm between cloves. Embedding depth - 8-10 cm from the top of the tooth.
In one row, it is advisable to select teeth of the same size, since different sizes will ripen in different ways.
After planting the cloves, you need to sprinkle the grooves with ash or dolomite flour.
Further, soil should be poured onto the furrows.
What to cover
If your winters are snowy, then you don't need to cover your garlic plantings with anything else. In other cases, you can cover the bed with straw or fallen leaves. Instead, some gardeners also plant cereals, such as oats, in the aisles. It will have time to rise before the cold weather, then it will fall from the snow and will reliably protect your plantings from frost.
