How to sharpen a drill correctly and with high quality if there is no experience and skills: locksmith life hack

The principle of this method

The meaning of this method is that an extremely simple device is made for sharpening, which will fix the drill at the correct angle. With this device, errors are excluded, in which you can violate the sharpening angle, as well as round off or somehow spoil the cutting edge of the tool.

What is needed to make this device?

As a material for the workpiece you will need:

  • a small block of hardwood (oak, beech, ash, walnut, etc.);
  • a hacksaw for wood or a circular saw;
  • drill or screwdriver;
  • protractor, ruler, pencil.

How to do it?

  • From the bar you need to make a corner in which one corner will be straight (90 degrees), the second - 30 °, and the third, respectively, 60 °, since we know from school that the sum of the angles of a triangle is 180°.

  • The size of the fixture must be made to match the size of the drill. For example, if the drill length is 100 mm, then the longest side of the triangle must be made 100 mm.
  • The thickness of our drill fixing device should be about 4 times the drill diameter. For example: the drill diameter is 8 mm, then the thickness of the bar used for this device must be at least 30 mm.

  • In the shortest side of the fixture, a hole must be drilled, half the depth of the sharpened drill. Example: the drill length is 100 mm, so the hole depth should be 50 mm. The hole should be strictly perpendicular to the short side of the triangle. Hole and drill diameters must match.
  • One fixture can be used to sharpen two drills of different diameters, that is, for this you need to drill two holes in it.

At this point, our device is ready and you can start sharpening!

How to use?

Insert the drill shank all the way into the hole, turn the device with its long side to the table top and start sharpening. It is necessary to firmly attach the drill with the back cut of the main cutting edge to the rotating sharpening stone without gaps and sharpen.

Our device will allow the longitudinal axis of the tool to be positioned in the horizontal plane by 30 degrees, this will provide the correct overall sharpening angle of 120 degrees. When working with this device, it is necessary to ensure that the point of contact between the drill and the sharpener is slightly above the axis of rotation of the stone!
