Vernier calipers: 4 little-known uses (from the experience of the old masters)

Tape measures, squares, compasses, folding rule, protractor - all well-known marking tools. Without them, there is nowhere in repair and construction. Many remember, but some did not even hold such a tool as a caliper in their hands.

A simple and cheap measuring tool. The main requirement for quality measurement is instrument cleanliness. Choose a tool in the store so that the jaws are flat and there are no gaps when closing.

Universal device invented by a Frenchman back in 1631. Now there are 3 types of instruments: dial, digital or vernier. There is also a columbic - this is a vernier caliper without a vernier, but with a depth gauge.

1. Vernier (type ShTs) - a classic type of caliper, produced with an accuracy of 0.05, 0.02, 0.1 mm.
2. Digital (ШЦЦ) is a more modern type of device. The instrument has an electronic scoreboard. You can put "0" at any point in the measurement. But sometimes they can "lie".
3. Arrow device (type ShTsL or ShTsS). A dial indicator is installed on the instrument. Graduation 0.01 and 0.02 mm.

The device consists of a base (rod with a scale), jaws for external and internal measurements, a depth gauge, a frame, a screw for fixing, a vernier scale. The tool is indispensable for measuring diameters, gaps, protrusions.

Experience of the old masters - the unusual use of a caliper

1. For example, you can mark a right angle on sheet or other material (if you don't have a square at hand).

2. Having measured the diameter, we make a shallow hole in the workpiece, insert one caliper jaw and draw a circle.

3. Another interesting method. We measure and fix the value on a vernier caliper. For example, 1 or 2 cm. We make marks with sponges on soft material (wood), as shown in the photo below:

4. I saw how the nuts are unscrewed with the tool, the nails are pulled out, the kern is used, it is used as a clamp.

But with such prolonged actions, it is difficult to make precise dimensions later.
