Non-contact voltage meter - useless toy or really necessary gadget in the house
All of you and I periodically need one or another device in the house in order to measure the voltage in the outlet, check the fuse for integrity, measure the length, etc.
In this article, I want to talk about a non-contact voltage meter from BSIDE and conclude whether such a gadget is needed in the house or is it just a waste of money.
Purchase and delivery of the device
So, I ordered this meter on all of you well-known Internet portal for 878 rubles with kopecks, of course, with free shipping. The package with the goods arrived in a couple of weeks, which can be considered a fairly reasonable time.
The device came safe and sound, but there was no crown in the kit (yes, the device is powered by 9 Volts), so I had to go to the store and buy a crown, which is an additional expense. Now let's see what the device is capable of.
Checking the operation of the device
So, this tester or smart non-contact voltage meter is designed, as you might guess, for contactless determination of the presence or absence of voltage, both variable and constant magnitudes. And I must admit he copes with this task perfectly.
So if you bring the device to an energized wire, it will beep unpleasantly, and if the wire is de-energized, there will be no sound. And for that, you don't have to look for exposed wire parts to measure it (unlike a multimeter).
Also, with the help of a meter, it is easy to determine where the phase or zero is in your outlet. In this case, the phase will be determined by the device by a series of short squeaks, and zero by more drawn-out and monotonous sounds.
That's just to find hidden wiring with the help of this device, well, it will not work. Since the meter does not detect the wire in any way under a one and a half centimeter layer of plaster.
Oh yes, the device has a built-in flashlight, only the light from it is rather mediocre and you won't be able to use the device instead of a flashlight at night.
How the device works and makes measurements, you can see in the video below.
Well, to summarize, I can say that this device disappointed me. I do not see any reason to buy it, because any tseshka (multimeter) will easily measure the voltage or determine its absence, and the determination of the phase or zero in the outlet is not so necessary a function that for the sake of it you purchase a special separate device and, thus, spend your money.
Better to really buy a multimeter.
