What to do with homemade Geraniums in the fall so that it lasts until spring. I share a plan that does not fail year after year

Do you want to keep your geraniums until spring? Then a fiery salute, comrade, a caring florist! Today on the agenda is an action plan, thanks to which the houseplant will survive the winter and become beautiful again.

See if it's worth keeping an existing instance at all

Decorative homemade pelargonium should be beautiful. Why else do we need a flower? It was noticed that it makes no sense to keep the plant longer than 2-3 years. Because the further - the more clumsy: the attractiveness of such specimens is noticeable only to their owner.

Comrade! If the plant is more than 3 years old, if it has already been pruned several times, there is no point in continuing. Cut off the tops, root them and grow again. Throw away the old geranium and let your conscience be calm.

Trim geraniums before winter

Cut off all unnecessary. And in the spring - cut it off again

Zonal pelargoniums (from simple to rosaceous and tulip-shaped) cut in half and remove all excess. Royal, "Angels", ivy-leaved - cut under the stump, because in spring it will not be possible to cut them off and autumn is the only way to give them a decent shape.

All the same, in winter, pelargoniums will drag on. If you do not cut them off, they will grow into an ugly whopper. I'm averaging a little now, because the needs for sun are different for the varieties, and my readers live in different regions with different winter sun. But I recommend that all citizens prune in the spring in order to form that very round, lush bush.

Consider the rules of slow metabolism

Such - geranium can only be in summer
Such - geranium can only be in summer

Comrade! Take it for granted: winter geraniums will never look like summer geraniums. The plant reacts sharply to reduced lighting. Long stick stalks, dry leaves are not just normal, but natural.

Because the less sun, the more the plant's metabolism slows down. It falls into a kind of rest period:

  • Water less, especially after pruning. The soil should not always be wet - let the pot dry out by half.
  • Stop feeding if the geranium stops blooming. Top dressing will not only not save you from leaf fall, as the crafty bloggers will promise, but will only make it worse. While the plant is at rest, it does not need any nutrition by definition.
Even if geranium blooms in winter, it still looks disgusting.
Even if geranium blooms in winter, it still looks disgusting.

But really you can save the situation only in 3 ways:

  • Put geraniums in the sunniest place in the house. But sooner or later, at the peak of winter, light will still be sorely lacking.
  • An ideal option, but not available to everyone, is a supplementary LED lamp with a power of more than 18 watts.
  • Place the pot in a cool room with a temperature of 3-10 °. When a decrease in light coincides with a decrease in temperature, our geraniums cease to experience cognitive dissonance.

Do you like geraniums and was this article helpful? Press, comrade, "Thumbs up"!
Sincerely yours, florist-psychologist Fedor Tyapkin-Sklyankin.
