But, such a sharpening will become dull very quickly, and the bayonet will quickly grind down and in just a couple of years it will become very short.

It turns out that even in the old days, braids were sharpened in a simple way, and they were dull for decades! To do this, you only need a hammer and an anvil or other rigid surface. This method of sharpening any garden tool is called the "work hardening method"!

In this method, the metal will be crumpled and pressed, its structure will be strongly compacted and will not be exposed to mechanical deformation even when hitting a stone, and the cutting part will become very hard, durable and will be much less frequent dull!

It is quite easy to make such a sharpening! If the steel is of poor quality and very soft, the edge can be hit with a striker from the hammer - this is the flat part of the headband. But if the shovel is made of spring or rail metal, then the shovel must be beaten off with the pointed part of the hammer.

Work hardening must be done on cold steel - it is by no means necessary to heat it up, since the risk burning of the cutting is very high - it will not work to heat the cutting part, everything will be red-hot shovel blade.

In the course of work, it is important not to make the metal too thin and not to overdo it, otherwise notches will appear on the bayonet, it will begin to bend and the shovel will work very badly.

This method is not the easiest, but once with a little effort, you will make your shovel as sharp as possible for many years, if not decades. But, be sure to stock up on earplugs, since the sound of a hammer on metal is very sonorous! And be sure to share your results in the comments - write how difficult it was for you to rivet a shovel to a sharp state, and how do you like the effect of such sharpening!
