Russia has modernized and put into operation the largest test bench for modeling new nuclear reactors
Representatives of Rosatom reported that the world's largest critical nuclear facility BFS-2 has been successfully updated and has already been put into trial operation.
So, in the process of deep modernization, the installation received new devices, supercomputers, and the base was seriously expanded. materials that engineers can use to successfully simulate the cores of new fast reactors, etc.
All the work done made it possible to extend the operation of the installation for at least the next 25 years. Why do we need such a stand in Russia?
Why is the BFS-2 test bench so important to the Russian nuclear power industry?
This test bench was put into operation back in 1969 and began to be actively used by the A. AND. Leipunsky, but at the current time the installation is actively operated by the scientific division of "Rosatom" of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation - IPPE.
Both at the time of commissioning, and today, this stand is the largest of the existing ones and about 10 thousand pipes are used for testing various fuel rods. Sodium, lead, lead-bismuth and a huge number of other promising compounds are used as a coolant in the stand.
And in fact, the work of this stand is of great importance. After all, it is here that algorithms for the trouble-free operation of nuclear reactors of various types of design are being worked out, including BN-800, BN-1200M, as well as BREST and MBIR.
After the modernization, which was implemented exclusively due to Russian components, the stand is again ready for active work, and in the near future the study of the characteristics of the core of the BREST OD-300 reactor, which uses the so-called nitride fuel (a reactor of this type is already under construction in Seversk, Tomsk region).
And, for example, closer to the end of 2023, a simulation of the BN-1200M reactor will be launched at the stand, which, for a moment, may well become the main brick of the entire future energy of the Russian Federation.
In addition, this stand allows you to study the specifics of using reactors that use the so-called MOX fuel.
