Chinese engineers have developed a powerful yet miniature Gauss cannon
A group of scientists from the Wuhan Naval Engineering University reported that they have successfully assembled and tested the 12-centimeter Gauss cannon. The general public became aware of this from a message published in the South China Morning Post.
In addition, it was also reported that the installation has a muzzle energy of 150 Joules, which can be compared with the muzzle energy of a small-bore rifle.
What is a Gauss cannon and what are its features
As you know, a Gaussian cannon accelerates projectiles by using electromagnetic forces, similar to what happens in an installation such as a railgun. But in a railgun, the projectile is accelerated due to the movement of the projectile between two contact rails.
The Gauss Cannon uses the energy of an electromagnetic coil to accelerate the "projectile". But for the military, this gun is not interesting, since it has a rather low efficiency. But the Gauss cannon can be made quite compact.
For example, the GR-1 ANVIL hand-held mass accelerator (railgun) created by the Americans has an energy of only 85 Joules. At the same time, the installation is a meter long and weighs almost nine kilograms.
And a group of scientists from Wuhan under the leadership of Zhang Xiao managed to assemble a Gaussian cannon with a length of only 12 cm with a muzzle energy of 150 joules, which is comparable to the energy of a 2.2 mm rifle.
At the same time, the Chinese accelerator uses only three electromagnetic coils, which perfectly work from one rechargeable battery.
No other technical details of the development are known, but even this is quite enough to understand that now the Gauss Cannon may seriously interest the Chinese military.
Well, we will wait for more details about the Chinese development. If you liked the material, then do not forget to subscribe to the channel and thank you for your attention!
