Drywall partitions are the last century. It is more practical and safer to do it differently
Despite the emergence of better and more durable materials, many people continue to build drywall partitions during repairs. I heard a joke somewhere: Almost any foreman simply loves GKL. Especially when working at someone else's facility.
Indeed, working with drywall is very convenient and, at first glance, cost-effective. But the cons of drywall outweigh the pros.
Why are partitions most often made of drywall?
The main reason is the economy. Yes, if you do not follow the technology for manufacturing an interior partition, then GKL is the cheapest option.
The partition should consist of a metal profile filled with mineral wool and sheathed with drywall in 2 layers. But saving is always more important. Therefore, the partition is often sheathed in one layer. Because of what it will be fragile and sonorous. Such a partition will not withstand shocks and blows, and it will not be possible to fix anything on it. Maximum - a small frame with a photo.
The second reason is the convenience of working with GKL.
Indeed, drywall is lightweight and very easy to use. Cutting and installation does not require special skills, tools and fasteners. But the fact that drywall is fragile, does not withstand the load, does not have sound absorption, and in fact does not save money, is its big drawbacks. That is why I advise you to use a different material for interior partitions - gypsum fiber sheets (GVL).
Why is GVL better than drywall?
- GVL differ in composition, which is why they have a more rigid structure and are a more durable material in comparison with drywall.
- GVL withstands loads. They will not crack from impacts and any structures (such as shelves and hooks for clothes) can be fixed on them.
- GVL has a high noise absorption coefficient. Unlike drywall, GVL does not resonate. It is designed in such a way that it absorbs and delays sound waves.
- Gypsum fiber material saves money and space. GVL is more expensive than drywall. But if you make a partition according to technology - in 2 layers of GKL, then one sheet of GVL will come out cheaper. Also, the partition made of gypsum fiber material will be thinner, which will save space.
Drywall is the last century. Now masters prefer to use GVL, because. it is a guarantee of quality and reliability. But, unfortunately, this was not without its drawbacks.
Disadvantages of GVL
- fairly heavy material
- you need to work with it very carefully, because. can break in half when turning the sheet (no core reinforcement),
- sawing can only be done with a power tool or a hacksaw,
- to work with GVL, self-tapping screws with a countersink will be required, otherwise the hat will not drown,
- GVL has a rough surface. For some jobs, this is important.
Despite all the shortcomings, GVL for the construction of interior partitions is an ideal option. The main thing is to learn how to work with it correctly! And drywall is best left for ceilings. This is where the equality of the sheet comes in handy and there is no need for high strength.
