Fertilizers benefit vegetable crops and ornamental plants. However, there are a number of additives that should never be mixed with each other, because they are incompatible.

If this is done, an insoluble precipitate, flakes and some other inclusions form in the water. Precipitation may form that is difficult to see with the naked eye. Both of them are of no use.


So, ammonium nitrogen, when it enters the soil, begins to evaporate. It turns out that such top dressing does not bring practically any benefit. But in this case, there will be no harm to the plant itself.


There are compounds that can cause burns to the root system of plants. So, when ash is combined with manure, a rather aggressive and violent reaction appears, as a result of which substances such as ammonia, sulfur, and methane are released.

Although a few decades ago, such top dressing was considered highly effective. Now times have changed, and modern gardeners have realized that it is much more efficient to do everything according to science. It is important for beginners in this business to know which fertilizers are categorically incompatible with each other.

Opposing fertilizers, when combined, will simply begin to displace each other. As a result of such a reaction, at least the plant will not receive any benefit. In order to reduce risks when using chemicals, as well as some organic fertilizers, several important rules must be observed.


When released into an alkaline environment, calcium ions act as blockers for phosphorus, as well as potassium. It is noteworthy that the formation of a fixed form, which is available to plants, is observed.

In other words, one or another element may be present in the soil in sufficient quantities, but the plant cannot receive it. The negative consequence of this condition is the occurrence of various diseases in the future.


Top dressing, in which nitrogen of the ammonium form is present, is strictly forbidden to be combined with compounds that have an alkaline environment: ash, lime, dolomite. If this is done, then fertilizer with such a composition will lose its meaning.


Superphosphate cannot be combined with calcium nitrate in advance. This can only be done immediately before fertilizing. The same rule applies to sulfur.


Superphosphate will be difficult to dissolve in water, even if it is heated to boiling water. When this component is combined with urea, a hygroscopic precipitate is formed. It is not particularly harmful, but the components themselves lose their active properties.


Phosphorus fertilizer does not tolerate alkali. It is difficult to predict the reaction here. It is strictly forbidden to lay organic and mineral fertilizers, as well as ash in one planting hole. They need to be applied to the ground only separately.

The rule is as follows: first one component is introduced, and then there is a layer of soil. Only then can the next component be added. The thicker the layer, the better.


It is strictly forbidden to combine all fertilizers in one well. But some, in particular, inexperienced gardeners, act in this way, believing that one does not interfere with the other. This approach can be not only ineffective, but can also harm the plant.
