Approach
So my strategy is: flax tow is universal and suitable for all sanitary threaded connections, while the PTFE tape is not always withstand the operating conditions, so I use it selectively.

Where to FUM-tape carefully
- I would not use the tape where the system for some time remains dry, for example, in the central heating system, which in the warm water is drained. Although fluoroplastic normally holds more than 100 degrees temperature and moisture, after few years such a connection is likely to give a leak.
- At any threaded plumbing fitting to rotate in the opposite direction may be not more than 45 degrees. I think even that much. If you have to release the connection, it is better to completely replace the tape.
- FUM Single may pierce and be damaged in the old threads, propped debris, shavings, fragments rusty metal and skip water.
Balancing the potential
At the same time, in the water seal PTFE behaves exclusively: does not lose properties, does not corrode, rot, but a tow systemic external humidity and low temperature - can.
