Did the building level start to lie? Don't throw it away: I'm telling you how to set it to zero and continue to work
Has the building level stopped showing the horizon? And it's impossible to work, and it's a pity to throw it away. I'm sure every home has at least one such copy. If not already thrown away, of course. But what is there at home: if you check the levels that are in the stores, half can be safely written off. Let’s tell you how I bring levels that have been thrown off the horizon back to life.
How to understand that the level is lying
I am sure that all masters know this method. For those who are still on "you" with construction, I will briefly tell you.
We set the level on a flat surface. It doesn't have to be on the horizon. On this surface, draw a pencil around the ends of the level rail. Remember the position of the bubble.
Expand the level by 180 degrees and set it according to the old marks. Look at the position of the bubble again.
If in both cases the bubble is in the same position, everything is fine. You can work. As you can see from the photo, my level is knocked off the horizon. In theory, throw it away. But I prefer to restore.
For those who offer me to buy a new level:
- a new or expensive level does not mean good
- old or cheap level does not mean bad
Checking if the level can be restored
Most often, the horizon gets lost after a fall. Therefore, the first step is to check the geometry of the rail. We apply it to a knowingly flat surface: a rule, window glass, factory edge of the cabinet... If the eye is good, look at the eye.
Smooth rail? We set the bubble to zero according to the standard and you can work. If it's a curve, take it to the trash.
4 ways to find a reference horizon for a level
Before adjusting the position of the bubble, you need to find a reference horizon from which we will dance. I know several ways:
- By the laser level. We beat off the line on the wall, put a bubble level to it and set the capsule in the desired position.
- Through the aquarium. We apply the rail to the aquarium (to the water's edge - it is always in the horizon).
- By reference level. On the same flat surface, we put two building levels next to it. Set the knocked-down bubble in the same position, which is now at the obviously correct level.
- Remembering school geometry. Let's show it clearly.
We apply the level to the wall, placing the bubble in the center of the capsule. We draw a line.
Expand the level 180 degrees. We combine one of its edges with the end of the line on the wall. And we draw another line. In this case, the bubble should be in the center of the capsule.
On the side where the lines have diverged, we connect their ends along a plumb line. It turned out to be an isosceles triangle. Divide the short side in half and draw a line from this point to an acute angle. This line is our true horizon. We expose the capsule with the bubble to zero on it.
How to change the position of the bubble on the level
The method depends on the level design:
- If the capsule has adjusting screws, rotate them.
- It happens that after a fall, the capsule body begins to move freely. We expose it carefully by hand.
- If, at first glance, the capsule sits tightly, we make a few blows on it through the spacer (shown in the photo in the gallery - scroll through).
How to securely fix the bubble capsule
The easiest and most reliable way is to fill the capsule along the contour with superglue. We apply glue. We are waiting for it to dry. Voila, this is a level that again accurately shows the horizon.
