An apartment without a kitchen or why instead of a stove there is only a kettle
The lack of a kitchen in a family home is unusual. Indeed, for most people, homemade meals, celebrations with aromatic dishes on the festive table are classics of family life. But it turned out that there is a tendency to abandon kitchen furnishings for a number of reasons.
The first time I saw the apartment without a hint of kitchen furniture was during a trip to Thailand. The reason lies not in saving space, but in living arrangements. Even wealthy Thais live in houses that look like luxury hotels with swimming pools, saunas, but there are no private kitchens there. Residents eat well in common canteens, where regular visitors are served.
Simpler Thais live in typical apartments, which include a room and a bathroom. There is not only a kitchen, even a hallway. In every district, food is prepared right on the streets, squares in public places. In the cafe you can order a dish of selected products, watch how your lunch or dinner is being fried, steamed. Clients are locals, tourists, for whom the kitchen on the street is a real attraction.
It should be noted that penny prices, always fresh products, the ability of chefs to quickly and tasty fulfill any whim convinces that here such self-organization of Thais is quite justified. Of course, you can see how they order food to go, apparently for feasts outside the catering, but this only confirms that Thais do not cook at home.
After Thailand, interest in this topic began to be fueled by new facts of the arrangement of apartments without kitchens already with us. It turned out that this trend is gradually taking root in the minds of young, actively employed people. They simply have no time to cook. Instead of full-fledged kitchens in the apartment, space is given to the refrigerator, microwave oven, sink and, at best, the bar counter. You cannot find a hob, dishwasher, or work surface for cooking.
In typical apartments, rooms with appropriate communications for kitchens are increasingly being converted into offices, bedrooms, and children's rooms. The shortage of housing, the desire of people to come to the cities prompts us to think about how to rationally use every square meter of living space.
Architects note that the greatest demand today is for small studio apartments, similar to small "cells". Lonely people in search of independence and affordable living are quite satisfied with such options with kitchenettes, even without them.
Such housing causes a lot of controversy, but life dictates and amends not only everyday life, but also the consciousness of the new generation. Share your experiences and suggestions on how to live without your own kitchen in the metropolis. Perhaps this is the path to the near future.
