Have you decided to bring old wooden furniture back to life? And it is right! After all, such interior items have a special aura, beauty and history. And if there is a desire and strength, then in general they can be turned into a unique element that will outshine all typical store copies.

Good afternoon dear friends!

But keep in mind that the recovery process is quite complex and time consuming. You should carefully prepare for it and study all the subtleties and features of the restoration. Only then can you be sure that you will not spoil it, but, on the contrary, give it an attractive appearance, making it a truly designer interior item. And so that you can refresh your furniture like a professional, and I have prepared this small step-by-step instruction.

By the way, before starting work, I strongly recommend that you make sure that you have the necessary tool for work (electrical grinder, jigsaw,... hammer, screwdriver) and a number of consumables (means for the destruction of wood insects, wood putty, varnish or paint and etc.). Then the process of furniture restoration will not take you more than 10 hours, and the result will be really stunning!

1.Inspection and processing. Start over! To give your furniture a new / fresh look, you need to carry out a good surface preparation. The final result will depend on it, so try to do this work carefully and scrupulously. There is no need to rush.

Take a close look at the furniture. Especially the legs and back wall: they usually look the worst. If you see many small holes or grooves, the tree is most likely affected by tree beetles. Get rid of them with special insect repellents. By the way, a simple antiseptic will help at the initial stage of the lesion.

2.Putty and sanding. After processing, carefully seal all holes from insects, cracks and other pronounced defects with a spatula and a special putty for wood.

Wait until it is completely dry, and then sandpaper to remove excess and smooth the surface.

3.Replacing damaged elements. If the pieces of furniture are badly damaged or decently "chewed" by insects, then, whether you like it or not, they will have to be replaced completely.

To do this, you need to make new parts from a material that would ideally match the wood from which your old furniture was made (larch, oak, linden, etc.).

4.Restoring handles. It is advisable to remove the handles before carrying out restoration work. And if they are in good enough condition, then feel free to reuse them. Simply clean them with a polish to restore their shiny appearance.

If the handles are still strong, but look bad, then try to return them an attractive appearance: sand thoroughly, then treat with primer and paint at the end with paint.

5.Furniture grinding. Often old furniture is lacquered or waxed, so try first removing the old lacquer with an electric sander: first with an 80-grit belt, then 100 and 120.

But if your furniture has been painted, then you will need to use a universal paint and varnish remover. So, first, apply the product with a brush over the entire surface. Wait for it to finish bubbling. And then gently scrape off the paint with a spatula. That's it, after that it will already be possible to polish the furniture.

Leave corners and hard-to-reach areas last. They will have to be processed manually with sandpaper.

6.Stripping. I recommend finishing the preparatory stage by treating the external wooden surfaces with a metal bristle brush. Run it several times over the countertop, walls and doors. The only thing is to do it in the direction of the grain. This will allow you to reveal and show the natural woody pattern.

After that, do not forget to clean the surfaces of debris and dust with a rag or a simple brush so that they do not interfere with your further work.

7.Varnishing or painting. Clear varnish is used to show the natural beauty of untreated wood. But if you want to give your furniture a completely new, different look that would look interesting and original in your interior, then paint it in a bright, “tasty” color. And then screw the knobs back on. All.

As you can see, you can also restore furniture at home - with your own hands. The main thing is patience and attention to detail!
