Scientists have created a robot scientist who has already managed to make the first discovery
A scientific group from the University of Liverpool has created a robot chemist that independently decides which chemical experiment will be carried out next. And during the first experiments, the robot discovered a previously unknown catalyst.
University engineers have created a robot similar in size to a real person. But its weight is 400 kilograms.
For visual control, the robot uses laser scanning, and it can function for up to 21.5 hours a day. It just isn't possible anymore because the robot takes time to charge the batteries.
In the first eight days of work, the robot managed to carry out 688 experiments, having worked for a total of 172 hours. During this period, 319 movements and 6500 different manipulations were made.
As the engineers who created the robot especially emphasize, their brainchild performs all movements and manipulations absolutely independently. And he chooses which next experiment to conduct.
As graduate student B. Burger, who took an active part in programming the robot, turned out to be the main and most difficult task to design the system in such a way that it was as reliable as possible.
Indeed, in order to function for a long time and at the same time perform a huge number of high-precision operations, the robot must make absolutely the minimum number of errors.
And the designers managed to solve all the tasks. Now their robot makes much less mistakes than humans.
And according to Professor E. Cooper, their task was not to create another high-tech tool, but to get an automatic researcher on the team.
The creation of a robot of this class allows you to bring research work to a fundamentally different level and a robot scientist - this is a full-fledged (but super-powerful) team member, thanks to whom the work will move forward much more efficient.
The creation of a robot scientist is another step towards the creation of an intelligent machine (so far an unrealizable dream of mankind) and, it is quite possible that in the foreseeable future we will witness a landmark event - the creation of an artificial mind.
