Neodymium magnet - how it works and where it is used

click fraud protection

Hello dear guests and subscribers of my channel. You have probably heard about the so-called super-magnets, which are also called neodymium. Do you know where they are best used and how such strong magnets are made? No? Then I will now tell you everything in detail. So let's go.

Neodymium magnet - how it works and where it is used

History of the neodymium magnet and its production

Neodymium magnet (also called NdFeB, NIB or even Neo) Is a powerful permanent magnet that is obtained by connecting an iron alloy in a special way, boron, as well as such a rare earth metal as neodymium (it is precisely by the name of this element that it is named magnet).

Neodymium magnet - how it works and where it is used

The first ever neodymium magnet was independently produced by engineering groups such as General motors and Sumitomo Special Metals in already distant 1983. And today there are two ways to obtain this type of magnets at once, namely:

  1. In the first version, the prepared powder from a mixture of metals undergoes a baking process in an oven under high pressure and a temperature of 1200 degrees Celsius.
  2. instagram viewer
  3. In the second variant, a prepared powder is injected into the liquid polymer, and then the polymer forms and solidifies as it cools.

Well, now I want to say a few words about the classification of neodymium magnets.

A kind of neodymium magnets

Superstrong magnets differ in two main parameters:

  • Working temperature. The first letter of the classification of magnets encodes data on at what maximum temperature the magnet retains all its magnetic properties. The following types of magnets are distinguished by temperature.
  • Magnetic energy. Further in the stamp are numbers. So they designate what magnetic moment a particular magnet possesses per unit volume. And here the rule applies: the larger the number, the "stronger" the magnet.

But like any product, neodymium magnets have their advantages and disadvantages.

Pros and cons of neodymium magnets

The pluses include:

  • Low degree of natural demagnetization. So a neodymium magnet loses only 1% to 2% of its "strength" in a year. And, for example, classic magnets weaken from 5% to 10% during the same time.
  • With a modest size, the power of attraction is much higher than that of a conventional magnet.
  • Due to their wide distribution, they are quite easy to purchase at specialized retail outlets.

The disadvantages include the following points

  • Fragility. The magnet is quite fragile and can crack if used carelessly or dropped.
  • Magnets stuck together are difficult to detach from each other.
  • Due to the strong magnetic field, it is strictly forbidden to keep such magnets near electronic gadgets, since they can become completely unusable from such a neighborhood.
  • If, nevertheless, the magnet is heated above the declared operating temperature, then it will quickly lose its magnetic properties.
  • High price. The magnet contains a rare earth metal, and 95% of all rare earth metals are mined in China. Local authorities have introduced export quotas for such metals (as they are more and more required for the development of the domestic market), so the price of such magnets is steadily increasing.

Well, now a few words, where can you find neodymium magnets?

Area of use of strong magnets

In fact, such products can be found almost everywhere, because you have such magnets in your computer, headphones in your phone, receivers.

They are also used in industry and even in the search and collection of scrap metal at the bottom of rivers and lakes. Yes, even in the bathtub, they can be used to quickly attach small hooks

Some craftsmen try to even stop the meters using neodymium magnets (by the way, I have an article on the channel with a video, where it is clearly shown why you should not even try to bring such magnets to the meter, on which there is an anti-magnetic seal).

In general, these magnets have firmly entered our daily life, and they are definitely not going to leave it. If you liked the material, then put your thumbs up and subscribe to the channel. Thank you for your attention!
