It turns out that the Finns do not like "square houses". Why did I choose this construction option, and do not regret it?
I never thought that the shape of a house could influence anything other than visual perception. But when I started building, a lot became clear ...
Friends, a big hello to everyone. Recently I read one interesting information about the fact that in the northern countries of Europe (such as Finland and Norway), they practically do not build square houses, but prefer rectangles. Of the advantages, the following is given:
- The ability to properly divide rooms, i.e. make them more distant from each other.
- The ability to position the house so that the sun hits all rooms most of the time.
Perhaps for some, these are decisive moments... But for me, somehow rather weak.
And here's why I'm happy with my "square".
Although my construction is still underway, already at this stage I can see the benefits.
✅ It was easy to locate the house on a relatively small plot. When you have only 8 acres in stock, and in addition to the house you want to put something else (a bathhouse, a gazebo, a garage, and a vegetable garden to grow greens), then it is better not to find a square. Especially if you want to keep all the permissible distances between buildings.
✅ The proximity of all rooms in the house, for me not a minus, but an advantage. Everything is near and at hand, and there are no unnecessary movements. In this case, of course, a rectangular house, with the same square, will seem larger, precisely because of the extra movements. But why this self-deception???
For me "compactness = comfort". And from this follows the next advantage.
✅ Energy efficiency. This is already a serious application... Especially when you are heated with electricity (as it will be with me), then such nuances are very important.
And of course, heating a "square house" is easier and more economical, precisely because all the premises are nearby.
✅ Accordingly, savings. And not only on energy costs, but also on heating equipment.
But all these criteria are very individual.
And for someone the "interesting" appearance of the house will be much more valuable than some benefit on heating. But still I don't understand the choice of Europeans, who are famous for their practicality.
