Russia may lose leadership in gas exports
The Government of the Russian Federation fully admits the possibility that in 2024 Russia may lose its leading position in terms of gas exports to other market participants. This became evident from the action plan planned as part of the implementation of the draft Energy Strategy until 2035.
So, according to the data from the document, the Russian Federation will hold leading positions in gas supplies to the international market, but more distant prospects are much vague.
Europe remains the main sales market for Russian gas. According to open OPEC data, Russia exported 261 billion cubic meters of gas. The second position in export was for Qatar - 143 billion. cubic meters of gas, the United States was in third place - 132 billion, Norway was in fourth - 111 billion, and Australia was in the top five - 100 billion. cubic meters of exported gas.
But at the moment it is LNG that is in demand. And in this segment, according to D. Marinchenko (Director of Fitch's Natural Resources and Commodities Group), The United States of America (the largest proven shale gas reserve), as well as Qatar (which is also planning to seriously increase its power).
It is for this reason that these two countries are able to soon overtake Russia in gas exports to world markets.
At the same time, as the expert emphasized, there is nothing catastrophic in this event, because the most important thing is not to maintain a leading position at any cost, and most importantly, that all newly implemented projects should be profitable.
Russia will be able to increase its share in the world market thanks to the introduction of new pipelines into the Middle Kingdom, as well as through the implementation of its own LNG projects.
But, most likely, it will not be possible to significantly increase sales in the same Europe. An obstacle to this will be the ever-increasing competition with liquefied gas and the smooth transition of most European countries to the "green" form of energy.
