When changing bathroom tiles is not a luxury! Brief instructions for painting tiles in it
Replacing tiles in a bathroom or toilet is an extremely expensive undertaking! It requires patience, time and money. What is so lacking for new settlers who have just bought an apartment in the secondary market? After all, changing it is not the same as re-gluing the wallpaper, rebuilding linoleum or replacing a chandelier. Here the costs are of a completely different nature!
Good afternoon dear friends!
The question arises: what else can be done so as not to put up with the terrible walls / floor, inherited from the previous owners? Painting them is a great solution! So you will update the bathroom and avoid an expensive event. For high-quality painted surfaces can last five or even seven years, until you save up and decide on a major overhaul of the room. But there is a nuance here, the tile is not a fence or a wall. It is much more difficult to recolor it. And mistakes made in such a tiny room will be visible to the naked eye.
Therefore, to avoid them and also help you renew your bathroom, I prepared this material.
Mistake # 1. Improper preparation of tiles for painting. In principle, the tiles are not intended for staining. Therefore, it is extremely important to qualitatively prepare its surface for painting. Here you need to take into account everything and everyone, not to omit or disrupt a single stage of primary processing. This is sanding tiles, and cleaning of tile joints, and degreasing, and a primer, etc. At the same time, difficult places must not be missed, all corners and “nooks” must be processed, for example, near the floor and ceiling plinth, behind the heated towel rail, around sockets and switches.
This is the only way you will be able to qualitatively prepare the tiles for painting and, as a result, make cosmetic repairs that will serve you for many years to come!
Mistake # 2. Savings on materials and tools. Painting the tiles is mostly a temporary solution. Nevertheless, in any case, you will have to live with painted walls not a single month or even a single year. Therefore, I recommend buying a good moisture-resistant paint (dulux type), a high-quality roller, a brush (anza), etc. And follow strictly the instructions indicated on the purchased materials.
You should not try, for example, to dilute the paint so that it is enough for the entire area. So you will only create problems for yourself in the future. For a slight shift in the washing machine, a blow with a shower head or dog's claws will easily leave marks on a surface painted in a similar way. Do you need it?
Mistake number 3. Violation of the technological process. To make the surface look perfect, you will have to apply the paint in at least 2 coats. In this case, you need to work very carefully and carefully. Dirt, dust, fallen hair, a bloom of paint - all this will spoil the surface of the walls / floor and will remain on them until major repairs.
Be sure to let the paint dry well. The first layer dries from 12 to 24 hours, and the second - at least another day. And only then can you stand on the painted floor barefoot or wearing soft slippers. After 3 days from the moment of applying the second layer, you can install large items: a bedside table and a washing machine.
Mistake # 4. An attempt was made to paint an unsuitable surface. Of course, any tile can be painted. But how long the paint will last on it is another question. If it is applied to a matte rough surface, it will most likely last a long time. But from a glossy tile without careful preparation, it will quickly peel off.
Therefore, such a tile must be processed with a grinder or manually with sandpaper before painting. Only in this case the color result will not disappoint you.
Mistake # 5. Misconception about the result. Don't assume that painted tiles will look like new, freshly laid porcelain stoneware. No! The paint will hide the patterns and cover the seams while preserving the tiled relief. So the result will be something in between a tiled and a painted wall. Something like this!
But, no one forbids you to show imagination and creativity. You do not have to make the walls plain or use a classic design (dark at the bottom, light at the top). You can use different color combinations, decorate the surface with geometric shapes or ornaments using a stencil, add original plaster decor, etc.
